I have training in DBT, CBT, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Trauma and Attachment, Transgender Issues, and certifications in addictions counseling.
The desire to be connected to others is innate, and yet we sometimes find ourselves alone, hopeless, sad, scared, and angry. I believe that being connected to ourselves and others is part of the human experience, and recovery from symptoms that interrupt our ability to live our lives to the fullest is possible. I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals who struggle with issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction. I believe change and insight are possible, and freedom from pain and suffering is attainable.

Experiences of anxiety, depression, and trauma take a massive toll on our lives and relationships, often leaving us feeling out of control, disconnected, and dissatisfied. However, I believe that healing is not only possible, but is something that we are naturally moving toward, even when it doesn't feel that way. As a therapist, I strive to create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can reconnect to that natural impulse toward healing.

I work with clients who are experiencing problems that are typically long-standing, repetitive, and significantly interfering with their life. Some examples would include unsatisfying or unstable relationships, history of anxiety and depression, feeling they can't "be seen" or get their needs met, and living with emotional pain, chronic shame and disconnection from self. Client's often want to explore the impact of their early life and development, or focus on increasing their self-esteem and wellbeing, and many want to gain a deeper understanding of their patterns. Psychotherapy is an effective way to heal and live courageously.

Deciding to begin counseling can be intimidating! Maybe you've been thinking about going to therapy for a long time, or maybe something happened to you that you need space to process, with some guidance. I enjoy working with clients who are experiencing difficult life transitions, mood and anxiety disorders, and those who aren't quite sure what category they would fall into. Regardless, our job together once you walk into the room is to figure out how I can best help. It's okay if you don't know what that looks like, yet. That's part of my job!

“How can I reconnect intimately with my partner?” “How do we navigate having different levels of sexual desire?” “How do we rebuild trust after it’s been broken?” “Who am I and what does that mean?” These are all questions I have heard many iterations of in my therapy office, so if you’ve found yourself asking some of these same questions, you’re not alone. Whether you're tackling rebuilding trust, cultivating intimacy, exploring sexuality, deconstructing harmful self-narratives, or developing communication skills, it is an honor to walk alongside you during this journey, as you invest in yourself and your relationships.

My style is compassionate yet direct, soft yet forceful. I combine traditional talk therapy with somatic therapy (i.e., therapy involving awareness and work with the body). I have a background working in the corporate world and understand the challenges unique to that space. I trained at the California Institute of Integral Studies and incorporate not only that training but my years of post-graduate education and time spent studying different energetic and intuitive healing techniques into the work I do with you. I practice as a contemplative psychotherapist. I believe in the basic goodness of all people and join together with clients to reconnect that basic goodness back into their conscious life. I assist individuals, couples, families, and groups in finding their next steps. I know that transformation is possible and healing can take place even under the most dire situations, feelings, and ways we are conditioned to think and act. I am slow paced and create an atmosphere of warmth, trust, and safety. I am available mornings, late afternoon and early evenings Monday through Thursday.

We all contain the inner wisdom to heal ourselves and move towards being an authentic, positive and loving person. The courage to be vulnerable -by moving toward our pain and confusion as well as our joy- utterly transforms and frees us. I am honored to enter into the sacred space of therapy together with my clients. I use an integrative, trauma informed, and strength based approach combining empathy, mindfulness, and radical acceptance as well as a plethora of therapeutic tools (ie--imagery, parts work, role play, body/somatic awareness). I have a passionate social justice orientation and am experienced in a wide breadth of issues.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
