Beyond providing general therapy services, I have 15 years of experience providing a safe, empathetic, therapeutic environment for individuals who identify as part of the transgender and gender variant communities.
Change promotes growth. Whether self-generated or completely unexpected, change can be challenging for some, and inspirational for others. Having a clinical partner to join you as you navigate your journey can ease the stress that comes along with the inevitable changes that you will encounter throughout life. My clinical approach is to work with you to emphasize your personal strengths and to help you discover ways to feel at peace with yourself, especially when facing stressful times. I work with individuals and couples to help you feel supported as we partner together to accomplish your goals.

I am all about meeting people where they are. I believe in creating an environment that feels safe and trusting. I work hard at listening and not trying to talk people out of their feelings. It is not my job to fix problems, but to help guide people to make changes, in order to meet the goals that are important in their lives.

My clients often want to gain deep insights into themselves and use these insights to see shifts such as greater self-compassion, less anxiety, and more fulfillment and authenticity. Whether processing trauma or difficult relationships, navigating their sexual identity (queer, non-monogamous, kinky, etc.), or working through everyday struggles, my clients seek an understanding, informed, and non-judgmental place that can help them truly get to know themselves.

My best fit client is an individual or couple or family that is ready for change. I work best with clients who are ready to embrace themselves or relationships in a nonjudgemental and accountable way. I will at times provide therapeutic homework and I can extend sessions to longer than hour because people need to express themselves in more than 55 minutes sometimes. If you are someone who likes to think outside of the box, you will enjoy my expressive arts background that supports inner wisdom and treats you, the client, as the other expert in the room.

Drawing from Existential, Psychodynamic, and Psychoanalytic therapies, I believe that our emotional lives are as much informed by the world we live in as our personal histories. I start from the premise that you are a fully formed person with everything you need to live a meaningful life and achieve the presence we are all striving for. The power of connecting with one another through therapy is one of the forces that can give our lives meaning and it from this premise that I greet all of my individual clients and couples.

We love to collaborate with clients to help them draw from their own expertise, build on their own positive values, discover their own skills, and use these new tools to work through conflicts and hardships. We are systems therapist. What that means is: we like to approach problems that people have within the context of social, political and cultural storylines that influence the way we view ourselves and our own personal stories. We use this same approach in family therapy to seek ways to change the way the family system works rather than trying to "fix" a specific family member.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
