Sometimes, core parts of who we are fall outside of what is considered normal or acceptable. It can feel impossible to understand yourself. You might feel invisible or wonder if you’re really the problem. You know that hiding these parts of yourself doesn’t feel right and isn’t sustainable. At the same time, you question whether it’s worth all the pain that might come from fully exploring and expressing yourself without hiding your identity, isolating from others, or masking. You may already have a strong sense of your identity and know what would help but feel that it's not accessible or possible.

Hi, I'm Kitt! I'm the owner of Defiant Therapy, LLC, a practice that offers an affirming space for clients to embrace "defiance" - a sense of trust in oneself that leads you to challenge expectations. I value creating relationships with clients that allow them to be free to discover their expansiveness, care for the parts of themself that need tenderness and fierce compassion, and get clear about the change they need and the acceptance they deserve. I work with individuals (adults and adolescents), relationships of two or more, and families who want and need this radical space.

Understanding who you are or what you are feeling is difficult when you are not even sure what words to use to describe your experience or what questions to ask yourself. Naming that is a big step. You may put on a mask to navigate the world in order to reduce the pressures you feel from society. High expectations when you were younger may make mistakes seem unacceptable. The journey to explore who you are may seem lonely. You may notice similarities in the relationships you form now with the relationship you have with your family. The early traumas in your life may be triggering you now in ways that are frustrating and upsetting.

I am a dream doula welcoming clients who have specifically been ostracized or misunderstood by the mental health industrial complex. Currently, services geared towards helping are explicitly gate kept by colonist practices, ableist perspectives, carceral state interventions, financial inaccessibility, treatment stigma, and other barriers rooted in the shameful, foundational practices of white supremacy and western culture. My work is specifically political, and intended to help clients cultivate a more liberated life. I curate space for healing as well as dream building.

Have you been secretly struggling with burdens trying to ‘grin and bear it’? Have you been traumatized? Feel unloveable or worthless? Does finishing school or keeping a job seem impossible? Are you having trouble connecting with family and friends? Feel like your full potential is unreachable? Or frustrated with life itself? You’re not broken or alone; therapy can be a great tool that can help you find that inner resiliency to keep moving forward without being weighed down by guilt, shame, or judgement. It’s okay to ask for support and help, especially when the world feels like a dumpster fire on top of our own personal battles.

Hello & welcome! I’m so glad you are here. I am a queer-identified therapist who is passionate about supporting queer, trans, & gender-diverse youth, adolescents, adults, & families. The majority of clients I see are either in the LGBTQIA+ community or are questioning or exploring parts of their sexual and/or gender-based identities. I help folks who experience depression, anxiety, grief, & trauma process past experiences and make sense of their world. I teach folks coping skills in order to regulate mood, gain self-compassion, radically accept hard truths, and set boundaries in order to build a more aligned life for themselves.

Life comes in waves. We all have our stressful moments and difficult situations but, at times, our ability to ride the waves falters. Maybe you are noticing that you haven’t been feeling your best recently or even for a long time now. You may be noticing your relationships with others beginning to become strained. Or you may have lost someone important in your life and found yourself struggling to cope. Sometimes it might feel as though you’re alone with your struggles or that people do not truly see you.

I love listening. It’s been deepened by many decades and degrees. But, before that, I was a trauma survivor. So I listen to you and your clients the way I wanted someone to listen to me. Both. And. Beyond the decades and degrees, which define my listening in different ways, I shelter people; under the beautiful, broad umbrella of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). I listen - as a container - to create space for clients to see and find meaning; however they define that. I listen with a biopsychosocialspiritual approach. I listen to private clients, organizational clients, and clients experiencing (& transitioning out of) homelessness.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
