You may be interested in therapy for a specific issue or the reason might be harder to pinpoint. Maybe you feel sad, anxious, or numb, but don't know why. Or struggle in relationships. Or feel stuck. Therapy can help with getting unstuck. Depression, anxiety, and other emotional conditions are what Jonathan Shedler calls "psychological equivalents of fever" - symptoms of underlying issues that vary by person. We are shaped by our relationships and experiences from early on in life and continue to repeat and reinforce familiar patterns, often without realizing it. Over time this (and even our attempts at coping) can create problems.
I offer you a safe space where you can speak openly, so we can develop a shared understanding of your challenges and rework what is no longer serving you. I've been trained in a number of modalities and draw from them as needed. New skills can be useful. But my primary approach is insight-oriented, to facilitate deeper self-awareness and more lasting change.
Therapy with me involves a joint focus on past and present. I won't talk much about myself, but we may use our relationship as one way of exploring how you engage with the world, based on your unique history. The goal isn't to get mired in the past. It's to recognize how that road brought you here, so you can move forward with greater freedom and intention.
