My clients are children from infancy through age 10 (and their parents and caregivers) who want to improve their relationships and the ways they function in this difficult world. I help them understand each other, communicate, process their emotions, deal with life’s problems, and heal from past wounds, especially from trauma. Trauma can affect children’s behaviors and emotions in ways that may be surprising. They may seem withdrawn or angry or highly emotional or defiant ... and sometimes all of these in one day! Children who have not been traumatized may also run this gamut, leaving parents confused.

In my work with couples and families, I provide a warm, non-judgmental presence to help you share your story, make discoveries, and meet your goals. I have a particular passion for helping couples, and I also work with individuals of all ages. I see family members as part of a connected system, and I honor each person's need for belonging and independence within their closest relationships. My background in education and love for the natural world shape my connection with clients.

It takes a lot of courage to come to counseling and taking that first step can help you to achieve your personal goals. I enjoy working with clients from all life stages and helping them with whatever they are struggling with. Anyone can benefit from therapy at some point in their lives. Hello, my name is Amy Dagenais and I provide outpatient mental health counseling at Functional Behavior Services. Functional Behavior Services is a privately and locally owned company based in Marquette, MI. I graduated from Oakland University in 2018 with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I provide services to preschoolers, school aged children, adolescents, and families using an eclectic range of tools and therapies that are tailored to client needs. I use a child centered approach in a fun, hands-on way for children to express themselves, learn new strategies, and demonstrate their understanding.

Ask most kids, and they will straight out say most adults are clueless about how hard it is to deal with the problems they face. As a pain psychotherapist (etymologically, “psychotherapist” means an “attendant of the soul”), I begin with the conviction that transformation is only possible in the context of a safe and trusting relationship and that your highest Self already knows what it needs to heal. I also am of the Palliative Care Philosophy that “True Pain” consists of at least five dimensions: physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual/existential.

I treat a broad age range of clients (1 to 100). I take a developmental and psychodynamic approach which examines early life experiences that affect one's development and current problems. As a marriage and family therapist, I treat both individuals and families, closely examining relationship challenges and providing ways to resolve them between parents and children, siblings, adult partners, and friends. I also specialize in assessment and treatment of trauma, abuse, dissociation, and PTSD. I have a dual approach of treating the source of one's problems and managing current difficulties.
