With over twelve years as a practicing therapist, I am currently licensed in California, Tennessee, and Colorado. I have helped clients: improve anxiety levels, self esteem, depression, relational issues, phobias, lack of a sense of life direction,
sleep
, and more. Through teaching skills such as noticing and being with sensations, feelings, and thoughts, clients are able to notice the patterns that get us stuck. Those with trauma see reductions in their PTSD symptoms, often using EMDR.

Gary L Flegal
PhD
Expertise with Anger Management,
Sleep
Improvement, Smoking Cessation, Performance Enhancement (sports or test taking), and Chronic Pain Management.
I engage clients in a non-psychological problem solving approach that allows them to discover their own power. Individuals learn personal skills that they can apply to their personal & professional issues. This results in clients making rapid progress because they are learning skills to help make the changes they desire, not just talking about problems. I believe counseling should be action-oriented and skill-based. Typically, clients learn the skills they need in 5-10 sessions. This means, unlike many programs, you won't be in weekly sessions for the rest of your life. Initial sessions last about 2 hours.

*EVENING Appointments * Have you ever wondered what a psychologist does? You’re not alone! Broadly, psychologists help individuals improve emotional, physical, and social functioning. A psychologist might help a client with 1) depression, anxiety, anger, or
insomnia
2) a chronic mental or physical condition negatively impacting functioning, or 3) managing acute stress/adjustment related to divorce, new job, retirement, or the death of a loved one. Support, psychoeducation, a fresh perspective, and improved coping skills can help you better manage and overcome factors interfering with your quality of life.

As a certified EMDR and complex trauma therapist, I help adults, couples, and adolescents address the core of their issues to resolve high-stress symptoms including anger,
insomnia
, depression, anxiety, grief, intrusive memories, substance misuse, suicidal thoughts, and relationship distress.
Is stress, anxiety, anger, depression, or substance misuse impacting your daily life and affecting your relationships? Therapy should be a proactive process that empowers you to experience results instead of just talking about it over and over again. I specialize in helping you take back control by addressing high-performance stress & environments, burnout, and traumatic events that disrupt your life. Many of my clients lead during emergencies and never thought that they’d be looking for help themselves including military service members, veterans, first responders, medical professionals, and their family members.

I have experience working with clients experiencing depressive symptoms, anxiety and stress, ADHD, family conflict, trauma, and
sleep
disturbances.
As humans, we develop physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally throughout our lives. During our life our development becomes tested by typical and/or atypical challenges. How we respond to these challenges impacts our continued growth. I love working with people across the lifespan addressing these challenges during which learning, growth, and empowerment stem. I have a particular interest in working with children, adolescents, and young adults in their process of ‘becoming’.

I work with men and women experiencing anxiety, codependency, depression, emotional regulation issues, family conflict, grief and loss, high sensitivity (HSP), life transitions, relationship problems, trauma (physical/emotional/religious), and more. I am also trained in EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a therapeutic approach that uses eye movements to reprocess traumatic events.

As we walk through life, we accumulate stories: about ourselves, others, how to trust and love and relate. Some stories provide a solid foundation for healthy relationships with others and ourselves, and help us move through this world with confidence. Unfortunately, some stories hold us back from satisfying relationships and/or reaching our true potential. My ideal client is ready to begin exploring the life chapters that could use a re-write. I look forward to helping you re-write your stories and empowering you to be the hero of your tale: a hero who is self-determined, confident, and secure in relationship with others.

Hello and thank you for stopping by. Counseling is a very personal journey and it is important to find a counselor you can trust and feel comfortable with. I always encourage potential clients to research, compare, and even email or call prior to the first session so any initial questions or concerns can be answered and addressed. Over the past 20 years both my training and experience in mental health have been in working with people with history of trauma, mood and anxiety type disorders, relationship difficulties, behavioral struggles, parenting issues, and life transitions.

My clientele consists of children, adolescents, and adults. I use a variety of approaches in working with my clients in an attempt to find the most efficacious approach to meet the particular client's needs. As a psychologist, I also perform psychological evaluations for diagnostic purposes. For example, I evaluate cognitive ability, learning disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and many other issues. Finding oneself can be a daunting task in our complex society. I aspire to help my clients achieve self understanding, a sense of efficacy, and develop tools to assist them in navigating life's challenges on their own.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
