Louis Psychoanalytic Institute in psychoanalysis.
Choosing a psychotherapist is a very important decision. Talking to someone new about yourself can be intimidating. I provide a setting that is comfortable, safe, and completely confidential. I ask what brings you to see me and what kind of help you feel you need. Sometimes it can be helpful to interview other professionals. Finding a good match is essential and my interest is always in what is best for the client. I do my best to make treatment recommendations and provide services most likely to help you.

I am trained in depth psychology including psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, and Jungian perspectives.
Life experiences can disrupt our connection with the self. As a result, we can feel overwhelmed and disoriented when faced with challenges. Therapy can help provide a supportive relationship where these experiences can be explored and recovery of lost or devastated parts of the self can begin. I work with clients with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, life transitions, religious trauma and deconstruction, relationship and family issues, mind-body connection, complex trauma, and creativity.

I see people for psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as for psychoanalytic treatment.
I believe that when a patient comes to see a therapist, they often ask these questions. "Will I feel safe, will I be heard without judgment and can this unknown person be trusted?" The therapeutic relationship is the most profound, protected, and valuable asset created between the psychologist and the patient. I am in awe of my patients courage and their ability to trust, so that the issues grappled with can be explored and understood, and that ultimately they can begin to heal and grow in ways that are both needed and desired.

With over 45 years in clinical practice, treating a wide variety of issues, I appreciate that everyone has a unique personal story. I believe that remaining current with relevant scientific findings enhances my clinical work. I also believe that training young therapists at four universities has sharpened my thinking about how to understand each individual, as well as improving my skills in conducting therapy. Over a decade of doing psychotherapy research has deepened my understanding about how psychotherapy works. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your personal situation. We will work together to resolve your problems.

Together we will find the right path, and right set of practical tools, to help you overcome obstacles and become your best self. After over a decade-and-a-half working in mental health, I am skilled in the latest, evidence-based therapies available (e.g., Relational Mindfulness and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy). But no single approach works for all people at all times and, remaining flexible, we will create a safe therapeutic environment with the best combination of techniques that works for you. So many different psychotherapies exist today because there is no one approach that works at all times.

My hope is that our work together can reignite those things that bring you the most joy and life. Often this process involves working through the impact of loss, pain, or trauma in a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. I work extensively with artists, musicians, womxn and queer folx, and much of my experience centers around religious trauma and spiritual wounding. My work is informed by humanistic and existential perspectives of psychotherapy, and I often incorporate the use of mindfulness techniques. I am also trained in a number of evidence-based clinical treatments including IFS, ACT, and EMDR.

Clients come to me because they struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, feeling lost and being stuck in patterns they don't like. Many experienced childhood trauma that has hurt their sense of self. Others come for support during life transitions or because they are grieving. I work with couples and adult family members who have a fear of conflict and tend to give up what they need in their relationships, and also those who fight easily and find conflict escalates quickly.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
