I have additional training in Brainspotting and am a certified SYMBIS (Saving Your
Marriage
Before It Starts) facilitator.
Have you been feeling stuck lately? As part of the innate human experience, we all bump up into areas where we get stuck and our vulnerabilities come to the surface. Whether you’re stuck in the grief of losing someone, caught up in an unproductive cycle within your relationships, or struggling to bridge the gap between you and your partner, feeling stuck can be an isolating and lonely experience. My passion is to help individuals and couples break free from the cycles, roles, and patterns keeping them disconnected from others.

I am a pre-licensed clinical fellow at The Briggs Institute, Inc. The therapists at the Institute are graduates of Lipscomb University's Master of
Marriage
and Family Therapy Program. As the only COAMFTE accredited program in Nashville, the Lipscomb MFT program has earned its fine reputation by meeting the highest academic and clinical experience standards in the country. Because we practice under the supervision of the Lipscomb MFT program core faculty, we remain connected to academia. This means our work is informed by state-of-the-art scientific research that most private practice therapists can't easily access.

Chronic anxiety and depression, as well as work and relationship stress, reduce quality of life. I work with individuals and couples to help them move toward higher quality of functioning and relationship. If you're struggling with any or all of these issues and feel stuck, therapy is an excellent option for moving forward and feeling healthy again.

Hi, I’m Matt (he/him). I am trained as a
Marriage
and Family Therapist, which means I think a lot about how our relationships shape our experience. This certainly includes relationships with partners, family, and friends, but also our relationships with self and the systems in which we live. Finding balance and harmony in these relationships can be challenging, if not overwhelming. I count it as a joy and privilege to be invited to ally with you in this pursuit.

I've completed a masters in counseling and
marriage
and family therapy from John Brown University in Arkansas.
Hello everyone! Thanks for taking time to read my profile. I help disconnected couples, restless entrepreneurs, and individuals stifled by anxiety and depression. When I entered this profession, I realized that everyone on the planet needs a safe place to go where they can be completely themselves...and say anything they care to say. At times we need to chat with someone who's not part of our family or friend circles, someone with the training and skills to navigate confusing thoughts, emotions, relationships, careers, and matters of faith.

I love helping clients make sense of their hidden stories and experiences. Often, these create chaos, make us unsure, and throw us off balance. I believe that everyone needs a comfortable place to rediscover balance and wholeness through unraveling their stories. While I see a variety of clients, I love pre-
marital
therapy, married couples struggling with intimacy, as well as singles and women who have experienced sexual trauma. I also have experience with Homeschool culture and the struggles and wins of the music industry. I offer flexible office hours including Saturdays.

My areas of research and special clinical interest include
marriage
and health, research informed clinical practice, couple therapy, trauma, sex therapy, parenting issues, mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
My private practice is different than most therapy practices. First, my practice is small. My job as director of the Lipscomb Family Therapy Center and position on the faculty in the
Marriage
and Family Therapy program at Lipscomb University allow me to limit my caseload to 5-7 clients weekly. This assures that my clients receive the attention they deserve. Second, my role in academia places me at the forefront of the field of
marriage
and family therapy. This means that my practice is informed by scientific research that most private practice therapists can't easily access.

How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
