What is your story? The question seems simple, but it isn’t. Your story is comprised of your life’s experiences from your perspective. Our stories contain themes of joy, excitement love, life and heartbreak, fear, anger and
loss
. With the demands of daily life such as career or relationships, it can be difficult to engage in being the author of your story. Who is narrating your story? Are negative thoughts dictating your self-image? Is your anxiety controlling your narrative? Or is your sadness causing you to stare at a blank page? Ultimately, everyone deserves a better story.

I work with adolescents and adults struggling with depression, anxiety,
grief
and
loss
, self-worth issues, relational distress, difficulties with interpersonal communication, and general life stressors.
As a systems-focused narrative therapist, I help my clients explore the personal, relational and societal stories (both useful and problematic) that shape and give meaning to their lives. My collaborative sessions highlight and emphasize clients' strengths and innate ability to "re-write" difficult chapters of their stories so that new pathways to empowered, inspired living can emerge.

I consider it an honor to walk alongside my clients on their journey towards healing. My therapy approach is highly collaborative. I value the therapeutic relationship more than any technique or theory itself. Initiating counseling is often a big and difficult step and I do my best to help you feel relaxed, comfortable and welcome. I am passionate about working with clients experiencing
loss
and
grief
. Many presenting issues come down to a
loss
-
loss
of a loved one,
loss
of a pregnancy,
loss
of hopes/dreams,
loss
of a marriage...and working through
loss
requires time, connection and a safe place.

At the core of trauma and
grief
is a person.
NOTE: Email is the quickest way to reach me. If you call, please leave a name. Are you going through something that others do not seem to get or understand? Does a
loss
seem to be affecting you far more than the "normal stages" of
grief
? Perhaps you find that you cannot get past certain images in your mind of a moment in your life. Time and time again you are not able to find relief. On top of that, others do not seem to understand why you are affected so deeply. You struggle to communicate the thoughts and feelings that consume you.

I especially love working with young adults as they move through transition,
loss
, and positive change.
Welcome to Counseling by Camryn! I am passionate about helping others make sense of their experiences, decisions, and who they are becoming. Sometimes the unexpected happens and can knock us down. It's important to work through these events instead of pushing them down under. They always have a way of resurfacing in the least helpful ways and at the most inconvenient times. Together, we can sort these buried items and find a place where they can be seen, but not interfere with the path that leads us to where we desire to be.

My specialties include ADHD, Anxiety,
Grief
, Anger and Addiction with a special focus on supporting men (Ages 15 and up) as they navigate school, relationships, work/career and overall life change.
Wow! There are a LOT of therapists, right? Unless the criteria were super narrow, this list is likely a little overwhelming—a lot of acronyms, a lot of jargon and friendly smiles; maybe fewer cardigans than expected. It’s a lot to consider. For many of us, scrolling through lists like this can feel like running in quicksand. And if you tend to be hard on yourself, it's all the more difficult. Whether you're navigating major life shifts, struggling but still trying to pin down why, or just at a
loss
and unsure of where/how to start, stick with it. It's OK to take your time. There are lots of people on here who can help.

Burnout, anxiety,
grief
, and
loss
can create feelings of isolation and leave you questioning your identity.
Are you deeply affected by the world around you? Do you find yourself overwhelmed by the complexities of life and long for meaning? Are you grieving the
loss
of a loved one, a part of yourself, or the state of the world? You might struggle with big life decisions and disruptions to your routine. This makes it easy for you to feel overwhelmed by everything going on and hard to know what to do. You could also be trying to figure out what to do since something significant happened.

So, what happens when you bring your humanness, your
grief
, your depression, fears, and "messiness" into a shared presence with someone who understands and accepts you just as you are? In such an intentional space, self-compassion can emerge and open a path to healing, acceptance, and meaningful change.
I am no different than you. I too have grieved and felt lost and struggled at times. I too have sought compassionate presence when I needed it most. And that's what gives me the ability to connect with my clients. I truly believe that we are all in this together. There are many helpful treatment approaches which I and other therapists utilize, but ultimately I have seen healing and growth take place in the context of therapeutic relationship and presence. That is what I am committed to bringing to those I serve.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
