I enjoy working with clients of all ages through a variety of areas including dissociative disorders (DID/systems), complex trauma, developmental/relational trauma, body-image and self development. I see clients as creative, resourceful, and resilient in the ways in which they have survived difficult life experiences. Although once highly effective, clients may find that these survival tools alone may no longer be conducive to their healing. Through therapy, clients can learn to expand upon their internal and external resources, enhancing their quality of life.

Are you constantly contradicting yourself? A part of you wants to grow and transform into your “true” self, but then you feel as though you are self-sabotaging again. You question how you can work on yourself when you are the one preventing the growth. Pablo Neruda’s poem "We Are Many" describes the internal conflict that many of us feel. As a psychotherapist, I noticed that my clients needed something more than just traditional talk therapy. This realization led me to become a Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist to help people “befriend” the internal conflict and embrace it with love and compassion.

Do you notice yourself being forgetful or having brain fog? Or those close to you point out that you seem “out of it?" Maybe you questioned if past events actually happened or if these hurtful experiences should affect you like they do today. You might also have a hard time expressing your emotions because of overwhelm, numbness, or fear of judgement. And there's a harsh inner critic that makes it hard to accept parts of yourself. If this resonates with you, know you're not alone.

Most of the folks I work with have experienced relational trauma (abuse/neglect), dysfunctional family systems, and/or social marginalization. Our brains and nervous systems are incredibly resilient and creative in adapting to these challenges. Ironically, sometimes the very adaptations that once helped us survive keep us stuck in painful patterns. My clients often struggle with chronic anxiety, panic attacks, overwhelming emotions, or numbness and disconnection. They may feel intense self-doubt or internal criticism. They may long for close connections but also feel terrified of relationships.

Are you a new or expecting mama that's desperate to break cycles of trauma? Do you feel like you're mothering without a map? You may be critical of yourself and have high expectations of your parenting. Yet you didn't have the best model growing up, so you're just trying the best you can. The new parents that I work with often struggle with feelings of anxiety, perfectionism, and never feeling good enough. They have often experienced painful things in the past and are hoping to create healthy bonds with their child or children. Often my clients worry excessively about their children and wonder if they can trust their instincts.

I help individuals, parents, and couples transform the fear, shame, and expectations that get in the way of deep connection with others and their most authentic self. When things in our lives feel uncomfortable or scary, we often react by finding ways to disconnect from our emotions, which only leads to things like anxiety, stress, rage, negative self-talk, obsessive thoughts, grief, conflict, and ways of coping that just don't serve us. You may know something needs to change but aren't sure where to start, or you may worry that you won't be understood or accepted. I trust that you make sense and have the capacity to heal and grow.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
