I work with individuals, couples, and families who deal with a variety of diagnoses and life issues - anxiety, depression, behavior issues, school issues, neurodivergence, ADHD, life transitions, and more.
Life can be hard across the lifespan. Dealing with school, peers, family, aging, career, and other things can start to feel overwhelming. When life starts to get out of control, therapy is a great way to regain strength and get back in touch with yourself. Maybe you want to learn coping skills, reach new goals, build self-esteem, heal from your experiences, or simply sit with someone who understands you. I work to create a safe, caring, accepting environment where we can deepen your understanding of yourself and foster a growth lifestyle.

I love to work with multiethnic populations, providing psychotherapy to individuals experiencing day-to-day stressors, childhood trauma, life transitions, relationship difficulties, attachment injuries, anxiety, depression; pre-marital/post-marital counseling, conflict/infidelity; families fraught with multi-generational conflicts, divorce/separation, blended families, and parenting.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in Charlotte, NC, and also serving Tennessee virtually. I received my Master's degree from Pfeiffer University, Charlotte, NC, and I've been practicing for 12 years. I believe when clients have a safe place, a genuine understanding, and are free from judgment, they can be their true selves, allowing them to do their best work. I also believe that with support and guided direction, clients can take the necessary steps to make progress on their goals and create the lasting changes they want to achieve in their lives.

I have been gaining experience with assisting adults suffering from substance abuse, anxiety, and depression since before I even graduated from my Master's program at UT.
Hello! Let's be real, so many people live their lives day-to-day, bottling up those hard-to-deal-with emotions or struggling to find stability with regulating themselves in a healthy, productive manner. I believe that through therapy, one can receive the emotional/mental support to achieve the goal of living a true, authentic life. The goal here is not perfection, but to at least begin moving towards a life you actually enjoy. It's time to be who you are truly meant to be.

I help people navigate anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relationship challenges — not by telling you what to do, but by helping you find clarity and build the life you actually want.
With 10+ years of experience across inpatient treatment, community mental health, and private practice, I've worked with people at every stage of struggle and growth. I know what it looks like when things feel impossible, and I know what it looks like to come out the other side. I draw from several evidence-based approaches depending on what fits you best.

In my 48 years of practice as a psychologist, in Tennessee, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire, I have had the honor and privilege of working with so many patients on their paths of exploration, personal growth, and healing. My approach is grounded in psychodynamic, existential, and Buddhist theories, with a focus on integrating mindfulness and compassion with self and others. It is my belief that the quality of the psychotherapy relationship between therapist and patient is the principal healing force in treatment. Thus, I do my best to form a good and ethical therapeutic relationship with each of my patients.

It happened again. You dated the same person, different face. You and your child can't get along. You had another misunderstanding with your parent. A friend is pulling away. You and your spouse can't get on the same page. Patterns. Cycles. They're often the results of deeply rooted cognitive wiring and we just need a little help connecting the dots...rerouting. Internal chatter often comes before external conflict. What thoughts need to be challenged? Is the breakdown in communication external, internal, or both? If you're ready to recalibrate, to get in harmony and in alignment with your social-emotional goals...Let's talk!

Hello and thank you for stopping by. Counseling is a very personal journey and it is important to find a counselor you can trust and feel comfortable with. I always encourage potential clients to research, compare, and even email or call prior to the first session so any initial questions or concerns can be answered and addressed. Over the past 22+ years both my training and experience in mental health have been in working with people with history of trauma, mood and anxiety type disorders, relationship difficulties, behavioral struggles, parenting issues, and life transitions.

Hi! My name is Julisa. As a person of color, I am driven by my desire to provide healthy representation of breaking generational trauma I longed to see available for myself and loved ones during various trials in our lives. I’ve used my wealth of professional and personal experience in community behavioral health and private practice settings to work as a team with people that are trying to create senses of stability, fulfillment and self-understanding in their lives. I aim to get rid of stigmas related to seeking professional help. Everyone deserves access to meaningful ways of healing without being labeled.

Each of us shapes and is shaped by the relationships we have with others, with our bodies, with our stories, with our cultures, and with our worlds. We find ourselves here and now because of where we’ve been and what has happened, because of how we carry our experiences forward and how they have made us. I am awed by the creative resilience with which we integrate or shoulder the burdens we’ve felt. I find astonishing and courageous the ways in which we not only survive, but find ways to thrive, to express ourselves, and live into the fullness of human experience despite those things that have hurt us and that hurt us now.

My areas of research and special clinical interest include marriage and health, research informed clinical practice, couple therapy, trauma, sex therapy, parenting issues, mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
My private practice is different than most therapy practices. First, my role as President of The Briggs Institute, Inc. allows me to limit my caseload size. This assures that my clients receive the attention they deserve. Second, my experience in academia places me at the forefront of the field of marriage and family therapy. This means that my practice is informed by scientific research that most private practice therapists can't easily access.

You are managing a lot: work, family, expectations. Most days, you hold it all together. But beneath the exterior, you may be feeling stretched thin, overwhelmed, or unsure how to keep showing up in the ways everyone expects. Many of my clients describe perfectionism, self-doubt, and the quiet pressure to excel in every role while staying emotionally composed. Therapy with me is structured and exploratory, calm and grounding, and at times gently challenging. My role is not to promise you will feel better immediately. Growth is rarely comfortable.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
