People may seek out counseling due to a wide variety of feelings: fear, anxiety, stress, depression, anger, sadness, confusion, apathy, heartbreak, grief, or any other aspect of the incredibly complex human experience.
I am also a strong proponent of couples therapy for spouses and romantic partners that are experiencing emotional or sexual disharmony. I truly enjoy helping couples become better and more successful. It doesn't have to be this way. You can be emotionally and sexually intimate again, even after infidelity.

I've been in private practice for over 15 years and enjoy diversity in my office. My approach is really dependent on my clients unique needs. I would describe myself as caring and direct and have been told by my clients that my challenges to them are as beneficial as my empathy towards them. My hope is to sit with people in a focused, loving and generative way, helping my clients move towards a deeper sense of vitality, self-awareness and authenticity.

Waitlist for new clients
Clients come to me because they struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, feeling lost and being stuck in patterns they don't like.
Many of my clients come in feeling broken, unlovable, and stuck. This is often the result of hurtful messages they received growing up that they now believe, and of abuse that has taken away self-confidence and left shame and self-hatred in its place. I can help you find your strengths, develop self-compassion, and lift yourself out of unhealthy patterns.

I work with clients who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, or trauma, often resulting in symptoms such as life and relationship dissatisfaction, disordered eating, perfectionism, loss of productivity, etc.
Do you often feel like you are not meeting your own standards? Do you feel stuck in uncertainty, unable to move in the best direction? Is it hard for you to feel satisfied? Do you desire more fulfilling relationships with others? Growing up, you may have encountered people who were critical of your performance / appearance, and who burdened you with unrealistic expectations. This can make it difficult for you to feel happy with your achievements and quiet your inner critic. You may be numbing some of the pain with unhealthy choices that are starting to feel just as inescapable. If this resonates, therapy could be a good next step.

I specialize in individuals, couples, and families who've been impacted by suicidal thoughts and related concerns, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and identity-related stress (gender, sexual orientation, ethnic/racial).
With individuals, I use mindfulness-based approaches (e.g., ACT) to look at your values (what's important to you) and tackle what's getting in the way of living more consistently with those values. With couples, I use the Gottman method to support you and your partner's ability to re-connect, communicate, and resolve conflict in a healthier way.

I enjoy working with adolescent and adult clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, life transitions, adjustments, personality disorders, relationship issues, ADHD, trauma, and self-esteem issues.
I tend to be gentle but honest in our conversations. I do not beat around the bush! I will also laugh with you when you feel like laughing. I never want to set expectations too high at first. We will eventually build to harder goals as time goes on. It is important to celebrate all accomplishments, big and small!

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
