I believe that each of us needs help from time to time. I like to think that all therapy is about recovery- recovering one's self, or maybe discovering one's self for the first time. Events from our childhood or past will influence our thoughts, beliefs and patterns moving forward. At times, we need to take a closer look in order to break old habits and patterns and develop new, healthier ways of dealing with life and relationships. Things like trauma, depression, anxiety and inability to cope effectively with daily life can keep us trapped in a state of low motivation and despair. Therapy is one way to unlock the true self.

It takes a brave person to recognize that they want more in life; it takes a courageous person to go after that. Trauma, regardless of where it stems from, alters all areas of life including how we see ourselves, others, and the world, how we relate, how we feel in our bodies, how we express emotions, how we think, and our personal sense of safety and autonomy in the world. We desire to help you resolve the experiences that resulted in trauma and recover from the impact trauma has had on your life.

I appreciate you reaching out. If you have recognized a need to change and don't mind reasonable joking in the process, let’s get started. To be honest, an individual you care about might have suggested a need for you to change. That's a fine place to start as well. I balance respecting the seriousness and vulnerability of the topics being discussed with humility, perspective-taking, and humor. While I acknowledge the benefits of emotional processing and frequently include this practice when appropriate, my ideal client is proactive and action-oriented. Simply put, I hope we laugh while accomplishing your goals.

My approach is non-judgmental, individualized, and collaborative, and I strongly believe it is key to first earn the trust of my clients. My style has been developed over the nearly two decades I've worked in mental health and through the 8,400+ hours of therapy, coaching, and supervision I've offered since becoming a therapist in 2011.

I help disgruntled couples, frustrated parents, overwhelmed teenagers, and anxious business owners. Human beings are social and require environments that make them feel valuable, understood, protected, and free to communicate all emotions. Take control of your happiness, replace anxiety with peace of mind, navigate relationship issues, improve your parenting toolbox, make tough decisions, and take control of the emotional rollercoaster. Your life is a journey not a destination, it helps to sit in the driver's seat.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists

How does cognitive processing therapy work?

A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?

CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?

A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
