Prior to beginning clinical practice, I taught high school students in Metro Nashville where I was fortunate to learn from the resiliency of young people. This invaluable time eventually lead me to pursuing counseling. My clinical experience has primarily been within community centers serving diverse populations, which has informed my perspective as a culturally-competent, dynamic practitioner. Areas of clinical focus are academic issues, addiction, anxiety, codependency , depression, LGBTQ+ identities, life transitions, PTSD, and trauma.

I work well with identifying and healing codependency patterns within the system.
I love working with clients that are actively on the path of healing. I have extensive experience working with addiction (both process and substance) and trauma and welcome sober and newly sober people to step in to a process with me. I am an 'out of the box' therapist and work best with those that are open to doing their therapeutic work 'beyond the talking'. In addition to recovery I love to help people identify ways in which to be more fully who they know inside that they are - even if they don't have the fully formed picture of what that is yet!

I specialize in Trauma/EMDR and Codependency /Attachment issues, seeing both couples and individuals. Trauma (i.e. repressed emotion and negative self-belief) manifests in psychological, emotional, and behavioral patterns that can be incredibly distressing. I've seen this poison relationships, where it presents as codependency , infidelity, addiction, and emotional neglect. In individuals it shows up as disordered eating/eating disorders (body dysmorphia, binge eating disorder, anorexia), OCD/anxiety, depression/anger issues, CPTSD, substance abuse disorders, and mood disorders. We'll start with the most distressing problem first!

I hope to create a safe space where vulnerability and honesty can be practiced and valued. My therapeutic relationship with my clients is most important to me; I develop and maintain meaningful therapeutic relationships full of genuine discussion, rigorous honesty and self-reflection. I enjoy working with couples who are feeling disconnected and unheard, parents struggling to understand and effectively guide and influence their child, women who want to learn healthy boundaries in order to achieve relationships with themselves and others that are authentic, and families struggling with codependency and enmeshment.

Life is tragic. No one get's out clean. We use things like alcohol, drugs, sex, control, codependency , work, serial relationships, and many other coping skills to try and make it through our pain. Maybe you feel stuck or lost or unable to take another step and so you numb out or check out or run or hide or fight and attack. Whatever you are doing that isn't working, the truth is there is another way. There is a way to be comfortable in your own skin. There is a way to have stable relationships. There is a way to have hope. While there is breath, there is hope.

I especially enjoy working with those who have experienced sexual trauma, are struggling with shame, anxiety, codependency , perfectionism, and burnout, or are longing for deeper and more authentic connection with self and others.
I am passionate about the heart and deeply committed to seeing you live more fully by engaging yours. Because your needs are as unique and valuable as your story, my therapy is grounded in Person-Centered Theory. I trust you to be the expert on your own life, and thus the expert in the room. My approach to therapy is integrative and trauma-informed. While drawing from Somatic and Attachment Focused EMDR and Play and Expressive Arts Therapy, my focus remains on the most powerful tool, the relationship. From my own healing journey, I have come to believe we're wounded in the context of relationship, and we heal in relationship, too.

Codependency Therapists

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
