I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in Nashville, TN, and also serving North Carolina virtually. I believe when clients have a safe place with genuine understanding and free of judgment, they can be their true selves, allowing them to do their best work. I also believe that with support and some direction, clients can take the necessary steps to make progress on their goals and create the lasting changes they want to see in their lives.

I’m Teressa Martin, Pastoral Counselor and Certified Life Coach, and I help moms trade overwhelm for peace, joy, and balance. Let’s be real… Running on coffee and fumes—juggling kids, chores, family needs, and putting yourself last? The stress and burnout are real, but you don't have to stay stuck. For 10+ years, I've supported Moms with faith-based solutions for stress, anxiety, and everyday struggles. I've seen life transform when you have the right tools, support, and encouragement to thrive—not just survive.

Life can bring many seasons. Some seasons can be challenging, making us question our worth and purpose. Other seasons feel permanent, leaving us feeling stuck and hopeless. Or maybe we experience a change, forcing us to shift and transition. My desire is to meet you exactly where you are, no matter the season you find yourself in. I hope to walk with you towards a place of growth as you realize your strengths and self-worth. Regardless of where you find yourself, you deserve to feel supported and heard

My ideal client is someone who feels trapped by shame, the LGBTQ individual exhausted by explaining their identity, the trauma survivor haunted by memories they can’t outrun, or the couple drowning in silence after betrayal. They want more than “coping” they crave a space where their sexuality, identity, or pain isn’t pathologized, but met with respect. Often tired of judgment from society, partners, or their own inner critic, and need a therapist who "gets it". Clients seek to reclaim agency to untangle trauma’s grip, rebuild trust after infidelity, or finally embrace desire without guilt. They’re ready to heal, not just survive.

Have you experienced emotional or physical abuse? Do you have a hard time calming down when you're upset? Do you have overwhelming thoughts and emotions? Have you been having a difficult time managing life since something big has happened? Experiencing trauma can make it difficult to control your emotions and have relationships with others. This makes it hard for you to trust other people and feel comfortable being vulnerable. I commonly see people who have experienced sexual abuse, traumatic childhood experiences, trauma from their religious community, and those who struggle coping with intense emotions and unresolved anger.

I believe that healing is always possible—no matter where you begin. Change doesn’t happen all at once; it unfolds softly, in moments of awareness and courage. In my work, I offer individual therapy and trauma-informed care for teen girls, college-aged women, and adult women and men. My first priority is creating a space where you can breathe—where honesty feels safe, and your emotions have room to be seen and understood.

Let’s be real; life as a teenager or young adult is complex and hard enough as it is. Add to that the confusion about who you are as a mixed race individual; the frustration of being directly or indirectly labeled “the black girl” in a predominantly white school; or the pressure that comes with being a student athlete trying to balance life on and off the court. The weight of it all can become too heavy to carry alone!

Clients will benefit from the creative infusion of Christian counseling, emotionally focused therapy, trauma focused therapy with EMDR & Murray Method, and the use of play or expressive arts.
I specialize in creativity and bringing that into the counseling room to create a safe environment that gently invites vulnerability and ultimately growth with attachment needs and fears. Creative tools such as sand, toys, paint, art, and other mediums are used to express how a person is truly feeling but is unable to otherwise express in their life.

People typically come to therapy because they feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or stuck, and are unsure of what to do next. I chose to become a social worker because I wanted to help people navigate these feelings, and my goal is to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space, where someone can express their thoughts and feelings, so they can figure out what they need to do to feel better. My hope is that my clients feel seen and heard, and they also feel empowered to make meaningful choices that lead to lasting, successful changes. I have worked collaboratively with clients for 27 years, and I look forward to working with you.

If you feel stuck in anxiety, emotional overwhelm, numbness, or reactivity—even though you understand yourself—your nervous system may still be holding onto past experiences. Many people come to therapy knowing why they struggle, yet feel their body reacting as if the past is happening now. I help people work with these patterns gently and effectively by addressing them where they live: in the body and nervous system. Using Brainspotting, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems (IFS), we work at a pace that feels safe, collaborative, and respectful so real change can happen—not just insight, but relief.

If you're navigating one of life’s many “what now?” moments—you’re in the right place. Maybe you’re grieving the loss of someone close, a friendship that faded, or a version of your life that didn’t turn out as you expected. Maybe your past—childhood experiences, family dynamics, or a relationship that hurt you—is still shaping how you show up today. Or maybe you feel stuck in the in-between: not quite where you were, not quite where you want to be. This stage of life is full of transitions no one really prepared us for, leaving many feeling overwhelmed and unsure about what’s next.

Christian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work effectively together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience in tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of culture, religion, and other factors on each individual.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Christian values?

Each person brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of treatment modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition that strongly influences the way they conduct their everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process. For some clients, a Christian therapist is likely to incorporate faith-based principles into emotional healing techniques.

How do I recognize an effective Christian therapist?

Christian therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Christian beliefs and values. They have an understanding of the importance that Christian principles play in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of struggles that can affect daily functioning. Like all effective therapists, a Christian therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of life.

Why might someone feel comfortable with a Christian therapist?

While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic success. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who not only is responsive to questions and concerns but also shares a client’s faith and values. Sensitivity to spiritual matters as well as to everyday struggles can provide a welcome sense of safety and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, both of which support the therapeutic process.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Christian therapists?

The directory of Christian therapists includes professionals who have shared their background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Christian clients, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
