Life is a gift that brings many joyful opportunities AND it also brings times of pain, suffering and added pressure. Perhaps you've found it harder to enjoy the blessings of life lately because of a hard transition, a difficult relationship or a traumatic event. Perhaps you've found yourself using destructive habits to cope with the stress such as dysfunctional eating, excessive alcohol use , perfectionism or isolation. Perhaps you're very hard on yourself and have a very loud inner critic in your head, and part of the struggle is negative body image. And perhaps you also want support from a spiritual perspective.

Sometimes unhealthy coping patterns include problematic drug and alcohol use .
My work as a therapist is guided by the humanist theory that people can heal and grow if they have assistance that is genuine, empathetic, and accepting. I believe that when we accept ourselves exactly as we are, then we can find the strength to change behaviors that are not serving us. I specialize in working with people who have substance use, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal conflict issues. The approaches I use are informed by dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, positive psychology, attachment theory, and family systems theory. I am trained in EMDR.

Understanding what life means to you can be one of the hardest questions to understand. Are you someone seeking emotional relief on a daily basis in ways you wish you didn't? Do you get triggered by people and find yourself more upset then you should be? Are you someone who finds it hard to separate from your job when you are not supposed to be working? Do you actually know what makes you happy? These are just a few, simple examples of what we can explore together. No matter where you are in life, you can live intentionally and fully.

I use a nonjudgemental, strength-based approach to help people identify and change unwanted patterns and problems in their lives. Some people come to me because they want to better understand and change their relationship to alcohol and/or other drugs. Couples often reach out to me because of violations of trust such as infidelity and deceit from addiction. These problems are particularly challenging to face and talk about. Anger, sadness, shame, and resentments can get in the way, making it difficult to heal, grow, listen, and to love.

Issues in your life are leaving you feeling disconnected from yourself – your dreams, deepest values, family or friends, and maybe your own body. It is not uncommon for people to come to therapy and say, “I just feel lost.” You may wonder where the meaning has gone. Life is confusing. Sometimes you doubt life itself, and you are forever doubting yourself. You're exhausted! Showing up is the first step in finding yourself. I help you identify your deepest values and adjust your life to live by them; I go deep and you need to know that up front.

I am a Holistic Therapist meaning I treat mental health through the lens of the whole person: emotional, relational, physical, and spiritual. I offer experiences treating depression, trauma, anxiety, eating disorders and other mental health issues aiming to bring clients into their bodies and out of the mode of traditional talk therapy. These include psychodrama, sand tray, art, and yoga therapy. Wounding happens through living, relational, body-felt experiences and require similar experiences to heal. I create a safe container and relationship for the natural process of healing to occur. Expect to move, breath, and feel... we will not just sit and talk.

I have over 10 years of experience in the mental health field in a variety of settings (private practice, community mental health, university counseling center, state hospital, and in-home services). My services include individual, family, and couples/marital therapy. I primarily work with adults and couples. I believe that disturbances of thought, feeling, and behavior are caused by ‘obstacles’ to healthy brain functioning. My role as a therapist is to remove the obstacles that stand in the way of you having 100% of your intellect, wisdom, passion, humor, curiosity, energy, logic, creativity, and joyfulness available to you!

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
