I love working with clients that are actively on the path of healing. I have extensive experience working with
addiction
(both process and
substance
) and trauma and welcome sober and newly sober people to step in to a process with me. I am an 'out of the box' therapist and work best with those that are open to doing their therapeutic work 'beyond the talking'. In addition to recovery I love to help people identify ways in which to be more fully who they know inside that they are - even if they don't have the fully formed picture of what that is yet!

Addiction
attacks a person's mind, body and spirit and then it tries to take away everything else.
I began counseling in New York when I was working as a chaplain during graduate school. I began in community centers, hospitals and prisons. During that time I discovered I have a genuine connection and desire to work with people suffering from the disease of
addiction
. When I returned to Nashville (the city of my birth), I began teaching middle school and high school, primarily with underserved populations. There I found that same connection with hard to reach youth, adolescents and their families. It is my sincere goal to help individuals, couples and families find a path to mental and emotional health and serenity.

Because we live in a broken world, we all experience trauma on some level (even if it doesn't "look" like trauma). If trauma has taken root, it residually shows up in our relationships with ourselves and others, dictates our perceptions & behaviors, and can even trap us into our own self-sustained mental prison. The question is not "what's wrong with you?", but instead "what happened to you?" I would be honored to hear your story & provide a safe space for you to unpack with no judgement. I am well-versed in Narrative Therapy, taking the stance that you are the expert on yourself.

Many times life throws us unexpected curve balls, and if we can catch them, we find that with a little help we come out much stronger, wiser, and ready to embrace life for a better future. I want to help you do that very thing. I have been a therapist for 30 years and I enjoy helping people find new dreams out what they believe to be lost possibilities. I have also raised four wonderful children and am personally familiar with life's seeming messiness that can evolve in ways we could not have predicted.

I am passionate about those from all walks of life and addressing a variety of issues such as
addiction
, anxiety, relational issues, grief, and transitions.
Life can be complicated, overwhelming, challenging, and messy. People don’t tend to fit in neat little boxes, but I find that beautiful. The people I comes in contact with never cease to amaze and inspire me with their stories, struggles, and victories. I am committed to creating a safe and nonjudgemental space for people to explore healing and reconnect with themselves, others, and with hope beyond ourselves. My focus is relational and I believe this is the most healing aspect of any treatment modal. “We are wounded in relationship, and we heal in relationship.”

I work with clients who are confronted with concerns about self worth,
substance
abuse, life transitions, depression, anxiety, relationship conflicts and many other stressors.
As humans we all have our own vulnerabilities, desires, insecurities, and each of us, our own past. Working with a counselor is a tool of empowerment that allows us to meet our goals, create self awareness, and foster changes we wish to see in our lives. With life’s twists and turns, we can get out of balance and have struggles with adapting to our ever-changing surroundings. I work with clients to find healing and growth in a safe, non-judgmental space.

The greatest privilege of our lives is to be seen, heard, and truly known by the ones we love. In the end, we are all we have. Whether it’s your partner or family member, when you feel disconnected from the one you love most, it can be extremely painful. My specialty is adult love and creating bonding experiences in couples and families. Helping people repair and reconnect after times of distress is my passion. I help couples heal their wounds from the past through emotional re-engagement and responsiveness. This allows them to move forward in a healthier way, so the past doesn’t keep sabotaging their present and future.

The clients I've been most effective with have been those with what I call 'blurry trauma,' which is early attachment experiences that were less than affirming. That kind of trauma leads to
addiction
, less than fulfilling relationships, and difficulty harnessing the resources needed to navigate change so the client can create their most authentic life and relationships.

Arriving at the place of wholeness oftentimes is a journey. That path has “detours” and “construction” blocks along the way. Some of us barrel through those and some of us turn around. Either direction leaves us in a place where we need healing. We all have the strength to conquer our adversities and I want to partner with you.

use disorders, low self esteem/self compassion, and histories of trauma. I don't believe you need to “find your voice.” Instead, let's teach you how to use your voice so others will listen. I believe in therapy, and its benefits. I want to help you see therapy in a whole new light. Let's get you feeling better and living well.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
