I also work with religion,
spirituality
and faith issues and how they intersect with mental health and relational issues.
Taking care of yourself, your relationships, and your spirit are some the most important things you can do. However, sometimes stress can pile up, relationships get strained, or unexpected losses leave an empty place in life. Sometimes even church can hurt. When these things happen it can get overwhelming resulting in many more questions than answers. It is a privilege for me to walk with people who are experiencing challenges and help them heal from wounds, solve problems and glean some redemptive meaning from the challenges they face.

I believe that some of the most sustainable human growth occurs via relationship. This is why I believe in the power of Psychotherapy: it can be a unique opportunity for healing, a process in which -- through genuine connection and honest feedback, we can begin to make sense of the way we have come to view ourselves, our relationships, our sense of
spirituality
and interconnection, and the world around us. Through our work together, my clients can begin to gain the tools needed in order to change that which they can control, but also genuinely accept that which they cannot.

Therapy is not about becoming a "better person". The process isn't something that you "work harder" at or "do more" of. You are already a person of inherent beauty, depth, and value. Together, let's courageously step deeper into the unique person that you were created to be.

As a Board Certified Christian Counselor, I believe stress can get in the way and this anxiety can lead to getting stuck in life. Often this requires identifying our unique signature strengths in order to find a meaningful career path, which returns joy to our lives. Importantly, individuals yearn to construct a new path that has a sense of purpose. Similarly, life issues fragment marriages that require realignment. Our Hope-Focused counseling approach is designed to identify and resolve your distinctive issues, so that your life may be may be repurposed in both your personal and professional life, focusing on what truly matters.

Angela Moscheo Benson
MDiv, MEd
I began counseling in New York when I was working as a chaplain during graduate school. I began in community centers, hospitals and prisons. During that time I discovered I have a genuine connection and desire to work with people suffering from the disease of addiction. When I returned to Nashville (the city of my birth), I began teaching middle school and high school, primarily with underserved populations. There I found that same connection with hard to reach youth, adolescents and their families. It is my sincere goal to help individuals, couples and families find a path to mental and emotional health and serenity.

I work with clients who are ready to meet and discover their soul identity. Depression and anxiety are often the gates of wisdom that burn us into being truth…through pain and suffering that is not fixed or changed, but welcomed like a disguised sage or master, we unlearn most of what we know ourselves and life to be…and we go through the death of our separate self to be reborn into the transcendent, beyond-the-personal identity, which is unborn and cannot die.

I help individuals, parents, and couples transform the fear, shame, and expectations that get in the way of deep connection with others and their most authentic self. When things in our lives feel uncomfortable or scary, we often react by finding ways to disconnect from our emotions, which only leads to things like anxiety, stress, rage, negative self-talk, obsessive thoughts, grief, conflict, and ways of coping that just don't serve us. You may know something needs to change but aren't sure where to start, or you may worry that you won't be understood or accepted. I trust that you make sense and have the capacity to heal and grow.

Each of us has our own unique path and challenges to navigate in this life. Many of us struggle to find the freedom to live out our truth and to follow our hearts because we are bound by societal and/or familial conditioning and programming that pressures us to fit into a certain mold that may not align with who we are and what we find to be true. This binding can often show up as anxiety or unhappiness, and many of us have trauma that continues to live in our bodies influencing the ways in which we react to what we encounter in life. We can work together to understand and alleviate what is keeping you from being more free.

It can feel like our feelings have us, rather than the other way around. We feel stuck in the same old patterns, and replay the same scripts and marching orders lived out since before we can remember. As a psychotherapist, I provide an empathic space where the patient can feel supported in their psychological growth and where their individuality is both valued and nurtured.

We become the most invested in the products of our own creation. Often the time and space to appreciate and enjoy what we created is overrun by tasks and attention needed for other details in order to generate or maintain ongoing success. The hustle to succeed frequently mirrors the anxiety of failure. How can achieving rest positively impact your business, as well as your personal relationships? Art is a great tool for mindfulness and self-awareness that enables you the choice to act instead of react to people and situations that exist in your daily life.

You’ve heard the message that you’re too sensitive, too emotional, and overreact. You wonder if there’s something wrong with you. You feel isolated without people who understand you. You get overwhelmed by socializing, irritating smells or textures, loud noises, strong emotions, and/or too many things to do. You judge yourself for how you look, act, talk, or feel. You can’t think of more than a few positive qualities in yourself, but you have no trouble coming up with a long list of flaws. You blame yourself for the hard things going on in your life. You wish you could feel more confident and connected to yourself and others.

***Now Accepting New Clients***I believe we are all born to create legacies. The world needs a perspective, idea, insight, talent, and gift that only you can give or bring. Different adversities attempt to diminish our belief that this is true. I am a therapist whose focus centers on client self-empowerment and determination. My passion is working with individuals and groups to help them ritualize peace by creating coping mechanisms to face challenges and achieve goals. My practice aims to promote healing by facilitating the creation of new road maps to personal wellness.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
