Addiction attacks a person's mind, body and spirit and then it tries to take away everything else.
I began counseling in New York when I was working as a chaplain during graduate school. I began in community centers, hospitals and prisons. During that time I discovered I have a genuine connection and desire to work with people suffering from the disease of addiction . When I returned to Nashville (the city of my birth), I began teaching middle school and high school, primarily with underserved populations. There I found that same connection with hard to reach youth, adolescents and their families. It is my sincere goal to help individuals, couples and families find a path to mental and emotional health and serenity.

Areas of clinical interests include, but are not limited to, life transitions/rebranding, managing stress, anxiety, & depression, substance use disorders, relational issues, self-esteem, & healthy boundaries.
We all at times feel inadequate, have a loss of direction, identity, and/or authenticity which transitions into a loss of real relationship. Our feelings, anxiety, depression, life losses, medical conditions, and other mental health challenges can knock us off balance. I am here to walk alongside others in finding a healthy path and learning to deal with reality in a positive way. My goal is to equip clients with healthy tools to live their best lives- a life that is true to themselves, that is whole, authentic, and empowering, providing contentment & fulfillment.

I have a strong passion for partnering with clients in the process of breaking free from the dynamics and behaviors keeping them disconnected from their lives. This could include addressing trauma, shame, family of origin issues, substance abuse, eating disorders, and other issues creating distance in clients' relationships-with others and with themselves. "Surviving" life is very different from truly living it; I feel honored to help others begin to reclaim their lives as they discover freedom from those burdens.

I provide support for people pleasers and perfectionists, I work with addiction and 12 Step recovery, and with those struggling with codependency and disruptive relationship patterns.
I am passionate and committed to helping my clients wake up to their true self that has always been there, but might be buried beneath layers of hurt, loss, trauma, grief, and learned patterns of behavior. Through my own journey of growth and healing, I want you to experience the same thing, discovering your sense of worth and value. My goal is to create a safe place where we can explore, seek answers, and address struggles and challenges you are facing. We will grapple with what to hold on to and what to unlearn or discard, and help you develop a relationship with yourself that feels good, grounded, and meaningful.

My clients are often those struggling with anxiety, self-worth, and life transitions/adjustments. I also have particular specialities and experience with grief, substance addictions or those who are the loved one of a person with addictions, and trauma. When you read the word "trauma" it doesn't have to mean only abuse, car accidents, etc. There are various stressful life experiences that register as trauma, such as divorce, neglect/abandonment, health related issues and diagnoses, miscarriages, and many more. All that is needed from you is a desire to be present in the counseling space. The rest we walk through together.

Thank you for your interest in my practice. Choosing the right therapist for you or one of your loved ones is an important decision. In fact, research has demonstrated that which therapist you work with matters far more than the techniques or approach he or she employs. I enjoy working with adults and adolescents who are dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, substance abuse, eating disorders, grief/loss, as well as general life difficulties. I am grateful for the opportunity to help the people I work with.

My experience includes working with adult clients who have experienced trauma or addiction directly or within their family systems.
My mission is to create a safe space for individuals to find healing, freedom, and self-acceptance. I am passionate about helping my clients regain confidence while beginning to love and trust themselves. I help my clients unlearn negative beliefs and begin to change relationship patterns that no longer serve them. I work well with people pleasers, people who struggle to set boundaries, or people who chronically sacrifice themselves for others. When we are able to know what we need and set limits in our relationships, we enhance our emotional well-being and our relationships become healthier.

I was raised in the diverse melting pot of NYC as a first-generation Chinese American, born to parents who emigrated from Hong Kong. After college, I moved to Nashville, where I had the wonderful privilege of traveling the world as a musician. These experiences afforded me the unique opportunity to hear thousands of people’s stories—from depression, suicide, grief, and addiction to hope found amidst it all. Through these stories, as well as my own, I came to realize the powerful gift of therapy and the difference that occurs when one comes to understand their intrinsic worth and their capacity to be seen, heard, known, and loved.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
