Hello, I'm Icy! (Yes, that's my REAL name). I'm a former teacher turn therapist and I'm full of energy which works in my favor because I'm a "17 and under" magnet and I absolutely adore all things child, couples, and family therapy! As a clinician at Radical Change Therapy, I partner with parents who are concerned about how their toddler, child, pre- teen , or teen is connecting with others, couples who want to be better lovers and parents, and families who want to create healthier ways of communicating. My experience in mental health/trauma, my background in the classroom, and my personality collide to create results!

We understand the importance of a relatable and post-modern approach to therapy by using models effective for adolescent and teenage girls, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and EMDR.
In today’s world, women and girls are faced with unimaginable stressors in everyday life — negative criticism from parents and friends about body image, anxiety and stress regarding world news, and difficulties relating to bullying, communication, and relationship difficulties on social media just to name a few. These everyday issues can trigger depression, anxiety, and trauma — not to mention exacerbate already present mental health issues such as mood disorders, eating disorders, or OCD. Our goal is to open up a conversation for women and girls to speak freely and openly about their mental heath in a space that supports women.

My areas of expertise include individuals with depressive and anxiety symptoms, self-worth and confidence concerns, women's issues, adolescent counseling, working to support parents to improve family functioning and relationships, spiritual issues, and other emotional challenges.
Are you often self-critical and lack the compassion that you so willingly offer to others when they are in need?  Do you want to feel whole, healthy, and empowered to live a meaningful and positive life?  I believe that is something we all  strive for and want for our lives, but life's roadblocks can present challenges that impede our growth and cause us to doubt ourselves. It is important to move forward in life with self-compassion and the feeling of empowerment to manage life successfully when things get difficult.

I specialize in the treatment of trauma, adolescent girls and women’s issues, anxiety, relationship issues, addiction and co-occurring disorders, and stress reduction for professionals.
I love to work with clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, low self esteem/self compassion, and histories of trauma. I don't believe you need to “find your voice.” Instead, let's teach you how to use your voice so others will listen. I believe in therapy, and its benefits. I want to help you see therapy in a whole new light. Let's get you feeling better and living well.

Life is full of ups and downs as we all know. However, sometimes it seems as if there are more downs than ups, and you need help finding out where things went wrong. You are not alone on your journey of life.

I help disgruntled couples, frustrated parents, overwhelmed teenagers, and anxious business owners. Human beings are social and require environments that make them feel valuable, understood, protected, and free to communicate all emotions. Take control of your happiness, replace anxiety with peace of mind, navigate relationship issues, improve your parenting toolbox, make tough decisions, and take control of the emotional rollercoaster. Your life is a journey not a destination, it helps to sit in the driver's seat.

Trauma disconnects us from our authenticity, reconnecting to our true selves can feel impossible if we've experienced complex trauma. I am passionate about building relationships with clients where they feel seen, heard, and valued. I enjoy helping clients reconnect and honor all parts of themselves, establish effective boundaries, navigate gender and sexuality as a spectrum, and explore non-traditional relationship structures, like polyamory or non-monogamy. I utilize a client-centered, gender affirming, and sex and kink positive approach to therapy and honor each client's individual lived experience.

I am passionate about working with teens and adults in Tennessee and New York who have experienced trauma or are navigating concerns such as depression, anxiety, or interpersonal issues. My goal is to come alongside you as we pursue healing together. Every one of us necessitates some additional support when there is something going on that feels unmanageable. While often difficult to initiate, meeting with someone is a brave step towards growth.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I believe we all deserve to feel connected, whole, and fulfilled in this life. For some, that means delving into the past to understand who they are today. For some, it is focusing on the present to cultivate a life worth living. And for some, it is a little bit of both. I am passionate about coming alongside my clients to navigate the stressors and challenges of life, as well as celebrating the wins. I believe that we are all doing the best we can in any given moment and aim to empower my clients in their next steps on their journey. Life is hard enough and we don't have to go it alone!

My conviction to help others was born out of my own experiences in life’s most difficult seasons. I learned that growth, depth, and hope come from when others walk alongside of you. My desire is to bring this experience to individuals who are needing help because I know how valuable and necessary it is to have someone along the way. Through a collaborative relationship, I aim to be a tool and resource to help shine light where you are experiencing darkness by tailoring to your specific needs and goals.

I help clients struggling with anxiety, depression, relationships, PTSD/trauma, motivation & life adjustments. It is not uncommon to find ourselves stuck or overwhelmed. We've often learned to neglect ourselves, our needs, and feel unable to call upon others when we need help. Many of us battle with feelings of shame and speak to ourselves in a critical voice. I believe this often comes from a place of wounding from our past that drives us further away from our true, authentic self. When we can learn how to care for ourselves in the way we needed in the past, we can shift our beliefs of ourselves and who we are in relation to others

I love working with clients that are dealing with challenges, and assist them in gaining the tools they need to increase their ability to live a sustainable life. Growing up in an area filled with poverty, I developed a personal understanding of what it’s like to go without due to lack of basic needs. As a Black woman, I have also seen a lot of racial injustice as well as the impact of unaddressed mental health challenges due to limited resources and access to care. As a result of my lived experiences, I refuse to remain silent and I have a desire to support those who are normally looked over and forgotten about.

I believe that some of the most sustainable human growth occurs via relationship. This is why I believe in the power of Psychotherapy: it can be a unique opportunity for healing, a process in which -- through genuine connection and honest feedback, we can begin to make sense of the way we have come to view ourselves, our relationships, our sense of spirituality and interconnection, and the world around us. Through our work together, my clients can begin to gain the tools needed in order to change that which they can control, but also genuinely accept that which they cannot.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
