Shelia McKay
Pastoral Counselor, MA
Murfreesboro, TN 37129
As a temperament counselor, I give clients a questionnaire to complete in order to help them identify their core/soul needs. Once a client understands their temperament, we can develop a strategy to live a life that is more stable and fruitful. Teens who struggle to understand their identity, self worth and passions are also favorite clients. Premarital counseling is so vital to set a solid foundation before entering into the marriage union. Marriage counseling is important and necessary for strong families and communities which I spend a fair amount of time navigating these unions.

If you feel like your marriage needs help, you're right. Too many times couples wait until its too late to move. Counseling doesn't mean you've failed, it means you care. I am passionate about helping individuals and couples connect the pieces of their lives so meaningful growth and healing can occur. Helping marriages survive is the reason I became a counselor, and I believe no one should have to navigate life’s challenges alone. As a ordained minister for over 14 years, I bring both professional training and lived experience into the counseling space. Healing is possible and change achievable. There is hope

After experiencing my own trials in life, I learned just how beneficial counseling can be to supporting us through life’s difficulties. It is my goal to provide that healthy support to others who are walking hard paths. For me, the therapeutic relationship involves a mutual learning from one another, as well as addressing a person’s needs from all arenas, including emotional, physical, and spiritual. An understanding of attachment helps me encourage clients to find clarity in their lives and healthier relationships with self and others. I am grateful for the honor of being a safe space for clients.

I provide counseling and coaching to female teens and adults living with depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder, relationship problems, self-esteem issues, major life transitions and maladaptive coping. It’s hard to live life to the fullest when we get stuck in our thinking, feel overwhelmed and become our own worst enemy. I strive to make sure my clients have the information and tools they need to improve their quality of life by employing a variety of interventions and techniques—and sometimes even humor! I am a Certified Mental Health Integrative Medicine Provider. I also employ hypnotherapy where appropriate.

On most days, do you feel like you're just going through the motions? Maybe you’ve reached a point where you feel emotionally numb, disconnected from yourself and those closest to you. You want more, but if you’re honest, you aren’t fully sure what more is… you just know that THIS isn’t it. You desire deeper connection, but at the same time you’re afraid of it. You might be wondering: what will happen if I allow them to see the real me? Will they judge me? Reject me? Accept me? Though these are some of your deepest fears, you’d never dare say them out loud. If this sounds like you, I see you, and I’m glad you’re here.

To begin, Distance Counseling is offered for clients who cannot make face to face sessions. I believe barriers seldom produce opportunities for change. On another note, I am usually asked, what person is best suited or needs counseling? Honestly, there are many ways and templates (Word document and Google Search) geared to answer this question. Those methods sound enticing. Yet, they operate from the focus of a proprietor. Another clinician may indicate the best suited clients are willing and committed. I don't need the BEST SUITED CLIENT, just those who ask for help. Let's Work Together.

Counseling can be incredibly helpful for a variety of life’s challenges. Are you going through a life transition? Have you recently experienced a loss? Is there trauma from your past that you are struggling to navigate? Are you struggling with sexuality, intimacy, fertility, pregnancy or postpartum? Are you struggling to connect with yourself and/or others? Are you feeling worthless, feeling like it’s impossible to love yourself? Does the concept of existing as a human feel really overwhelming right now? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this can be a valuable indicator that counseling may be beneficial right now.

Infidelity Therapists
How does therapy for infidelity work?
A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.

How long does therapy for infidelity take?
Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.

How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?
When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.

How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?
Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
