Then I trained as a psychotherapist, learning how Christian spirituality and evidence-based therapy can work together to bring lasting change.
I love working with individuals who find themselves in or near spiritual crisis. Maybe you’ve begged God to heal you or free you from addiction, but it’s been years and heaven feels silent. Maybe you’re questioning the beliefs you grew up with, and that inner voice warns that if your faith slips, you’ll be lost. Or maybe you feel powerless against dark forces or patterns that won’t let go, no matter how much you pray. You’ve tried Scripture, surrender, and self-control—yet still feel stuck. So where do you turn when prayer alone doesn’t bring peace?

"We are born in relationship. We grow in relationship. We are wounded in relationship. And we are healed in relationship." - Harville Hendrix. Therapy can benefit us in many ways including feeling heard, growing in self awareness, and healing from adversity life throws at us. It is also a great place to learn compassion for ourselves and empathy for others in our lives. As a therapist, I believe people are relational creatures. We can thrive or suffer greatly depending upon the quality of our relationships with God, others, and ourselves.

You’re the one everyone relies on—at work, in relationships, and in your family. You take care of others, think about their feelings, and try not to disappoint anyone. But inside, you feel overwhelmed, emotionally tired, and unsure of what you even need anymore. You may feel guilty for wanting more rest, space, or support. You overthink decisions, second-guess yourself, and feel pressure to “get it right.” You’re exhausted from holding everything together and want relief that actually lasts—not just another way to cope.

You've achieved so much in your public life - degrees from great schools; professional honors; affluent lifestyle, etc. So how has your private life gone so painfully amiss - personal agonies; broken relationships; professional emptiness? When their lives become too much to bear alone, I meet my clients with empathy and compassion. As we work with the client's "gift of desperation," I guide clients on a transformational path into deeper healing, freedom and clarity. With my background as a courtroom lawyer, I have proven especially effective for professional people "driven" to achieve high goals.

We often come to a crossroads in our lives, a time when staying where we are is no longer sustainable, yet we are not clear on how to do something different, or how to start down a new path. Many of us learned early on to only show aspects of ourselves that were “acceptable;” we learned which traits earned us love and cultivated those, but relinquished many others. Healing is a journey back to ourselves, a journey back our essence and back to who we were before we learned we were not enough.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
