The most important parts of mental wellness are the ability to increase one’s self-awareness and broaden one’s perspective. As your counselor, I will provide a safe and judgment free environment for you to gain a better understanding of whatever issues you are dealing with as an individual, couple, or family including marital/relationship, mental health issues. The main goal of most clients is "to feel better," and I am here to help you make that goal more specific so that you can grow in the areas most important to you. I also strive to destigmatize counseling for
men
, Black / African-Americans, and other minority groups.

Change can be a difficult thing to accomplish on your own when the methods you have tried in the past have been unsuccessful. Sometimes it requires someone asking the hard questions that you have avoided or the questions you didn't know to ask yourself. If you are looking to make positive changes in your life then it may be time to enlist the help of a licensed counselor.

My hope is to create a relationship between the therapist and the individual that fosters positive and lasting change. To that end, I work patiently to ensure a sense of trust and safety. In addition, I feel I work well with individuals who go to therapy to be challenged, to be "unstuck." In these cases, I can be supportive while also being firm and direct. My approach is sensitive to the individual's life circumstance, their personality, and their comfort level with the therapeutic process.

I am a licensed psychologist with training and experience in treating a wide variety of psychological disorders. I work with adults with alcoholism, drug addiction, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, phobias and phase of life problems, i.e. marital problems and divorce, job loss, physical illness. While my approach to treatment is primarily cognitive-behavioral, I also rely on other treatment approaches and interventions. I believe that the psychologist and the individual must work together as a team. Thus, each treatment plan is created by working together according to the needs of the individual.

Depression, anxiety, anger: sometimes our feelings can be confusing and overwhelming. Struggles at home and work increase when we're not sure how we feel or what to do with our feelings. Our relationships suffer, we don't feel happy and content, and we may wonder if there will ever be improvement. These feelings are often more intense for people who have experienced significant trauma or loss. Figuring out how to seek help and talk about these issues can be difficult. It's hard to know who to turn to, who to trust, and allow ourselves to imagine positive change. Sometimes it's hard to hope.

We are created for relationship. When we are distant things feel wrong and uncomfortable. Being disconnected from those we love brings up sadness, anxiety, depression, stress, anger. It hurts to be distant. We feel lost and alone, not able to turn to the ones we love most for comfort and care. These longings and their distressing feelings don’t just go away. In the absence of relief, we may choose other ways to cope, using distance, distractions, substances, numbing out, or isolation.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
