As a couples or family counselor I will facilitate a deeper level of communication between clients so that you can be not only heard, but also understood by your partner or loved ones.
The most important parts of mental wellness are the ability to increase one’s self-awareness and broaden one’s perspective. As your counselor, I will provide a safe and judgment free environment for you to gain a better understanding of whatever issues you are dealing with as an individual, couple, or family including marital/relationship, mental health issues. The main goal of most clients is "to feel better," and I am here to help you make that goal more specific so that you can grow in the areas most important to you. I also strive to destigmatize counseling for men, Black / African-Americans, and other minority groups.

Our time in counseling may also include an exploration of your family -of-origin, goals, present habits and emotional struggles.
Life presents us with many unexpected challenges that can leave us feeling hurt, lonely, anxious and stressed. Maybe you are struggling with insecurity, uncertainty or a lack of direction. In times of distress, it can be difficult to share with anyone, let alone someone you’ve never met. Building a relationship is the most important step in the counseling process and hinges on empathy, respect and safety within the therapy office. Healing happens when we feel fully accepted while being vulnerable and authentic. This can only be achieved through a strong therapeutic alliance. In this space, you will be welcomed, heard and supported.

My experience includes hundreds of cases concerning trauma, mood and personality disorders, life-transitions, and family conflict.
My hope is to create a relationship between the therapist and the individual that fosters positive and lasting change. To that end, I work patiently to ensure a sense of trust and safety. In addition, I feel I work well with individuals who go to therapy to be challenged, to be "unstuck." In these cases, I can be supportive while also being firm and direct. My approach is sensitive to the individual's life circumstance, their personality, and their comfort level with the therapeutic process.

Developing your personal and relational identity is the top focus of the therapy I provide. My goal as your provider is to help you reach your full potential for growth and happiness. I help those who are experiencing gender dysphoria, sexuality concerns, mood disturbance, anxiety issues, behavioral issues, trauma survivors, and those who are self-harming or suicidal reconnect with whom they are essentially. I believe it is imperative to identify and examine systemic, environmental, and community influences that may be thwarting your growth and decrease self-blame for factors outside your control.

I would appreciate the opportunity to walk alongside you, you and your spouse, or your entire family on a journey to a better place.
We are created for relationship. When we are distant things feel wrong and uncomfortable. Being disconnected from those we love brings up sadness, anxiety, depression, stress, anger. It hurts to be distant. We feel lost and alone, not able to turn to the ones we love most for comfort and care. These longings and their distressing feelings don’t just go away. In the absence of relief, we may choose other ways to cope, using distance, distractions, substances, numbing out, or isolation.

I believe the therapeutic relationship is an organic experience that cannot be created elsewhere. My experience has shown me that each of us walks our own path and that no two are the same. Having support while walking your path can be just the thing to make the difference. I strive to provide safety so that you can talk about your life, your family , your pain, and sit in the tension to ultimately begin living more authentically. I work from a holistic approach; given that, we will develop the best course of treatment for your needs, together.

We are created by the life we have had, family of origin, traumas and those that have come into our lives.
I work with couples, families and adolescents. What they all have in common is a feeling of why is this happening to me? What do I do now? Is everyone doing better than I am? Is everyone managing so much easier than we are? Why is my marriage so difficult? Is parenting this hard for everyone? I know that life can be complicated, and it does not come with a manual. My goal is to work with clients to face and navigate their life so that they can gain perspective and grow. My love is working with clients so they can move through this world in such a way that they can be strong mentally and in healthy families and relationships.

My specialty is adolescent sex offender treatment of both perpetrators and victims, along with family members.
I believe people perceive their world through experiences, socialization, belief systems, values, and cultural norms. These perceptions create "thinking" norms and subsequent feelings leading to patterns of behavior. It is human nature to hold onto these perceptions even when they are ineffective and non-productive. Most people want to be cared for and freed from fear, which comes in many styles, shapes, and colors. Resolution of issues encompasses a higher and more rewarding level of functioning than previously held in spirituality, individuality, relationships, family , the workplace, and so many other nuances in one's life .

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
