Individuals seeking psychotherapy are often at a critical moment in life when their inner pain and struggles are no longer tolerable and must be acknowledged, explored, and understood. Within the therapeutic relationship , the deepest and often unknown parts of ourselves can be gradually brought to light. While relief from specific disorders and symptoms is an initial goal of psychotherapy, devoted attention to the process of coming to know and accept oneself and experience a renewed sense of meaning and purpose is the ultimate aim, one that continues to unfold over a lifetime.

Life presents us with many unexpected challenges that can leave us feeling hurt, lonely, anxious and stressed. Maybe you are struggling with insecurity, uncertainty or a lack of direction. In times of distress, it can be difficult to share with anyone, let alone someone you’ve never met. Building a relationship is the most important step in the counseling process and hinges on empathy, respect and safety within the therapy office. Healing happens when we feel fully accepted while being vulnerable and authentic. This can only be achieved through a strong therapeutic alliance. In this space, you will be welcomed, heard and supported.

::You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. {excerpt from Mary Oliver’s Wild Geese):: When seeking help, the therapeutic relationship is where it all starts. My desire is to offer a safe, non-judgmental, compassionate foundation for each person I share space with. I want you to believe, as much as I do, in your own inherent resilience and capacity to self- heal.

We are created for relationship . When we are distant things feel wrong and uncomfortable. Being disconnected from those we love brings up sadness, anxiety, depression, stress, anger. It hurts to be distant. We feel lost and alone, not able to turn to the ones we love most for comfort and care. These longings and their distressing feelings don’t just go away. In the absence of relief, we may choose other ways to cope, using distance, distractions, substances, numbing out, or isolation.

My hope is to create a relationship between the therapist and the individual that fosters positive and lasting change. To that end, I work patiently to ensure a sense of trust and safety. In addition, I feel I work well with individuals who go to therapy to be challenged, to be "unstuck." In these cases, I can be supportive while also being firm and direct. My approach is sensitive to the individual's life circumstance, their personality, and their comfort level with the therapeutic process.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
