The problematic areas I treat often are categorized as depression, anxiety, stress,
bipolar
, addiction, codependency, and trauma.
Life can be difficult and challenging. We are often taught and develop maladaptive ways of coping just to get by. At some point in our life we could benefit from education and guidance on how to make improvements leading to a healthier more fulfilling life. That is the goal in therapy: to foster healing that leads to balance in one’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. This may look different for each client. Some people need to simply be heard, others need to learn and make changes in their present life, and others need to process pain from their past that is still affecting them today.

Imagine you’re a connective person, committed to justice and healing, but you find yourself feeling alone and confused about why you are continually struggling in relationships. Imagine being worried if intergenerational trauma has made being in healthy relationship out of reach for you. Imagine knowing you’re intelligent, but you worry you're not reaching your potential because you’ve spent your life taking care of others and managing your anxiety/self doubt. Imagine you have a hard time trusting/knowing your own voice, or setting boundaries for yourself and others. If any of these scenarios are your reality, I can help you!

I believe people perceive their world through experiences, socialization, belief systems, values, and cultural norms. These perceptions create "thinking" norms and subsequent feelings leading to patterns of behavior. It is human nature to hold onto these perceptions even when they are ineffective and non-productive. Most people want to be cared for and freed from fear, which comes in many styles, shapes, and colors. Resolution of issues encompasses a higher and more rewarding level of functioning than previously held in spirituality, individuality, relationships, family, the workplace, and so many other nuances in one's life .

Individuals seeking psychotherapy are often at a critical moment in life when their inner pain and struggles are no longer tolerable and must be acknowledged, explored, and understood. Within the therapeutic relationship, the deepest and often unknown parts of ourselves can be gradually brought to light. While relief from specific disorders and symptoms is an initial goal of psychotherapy, devoted attention to the process of coming to know and accept oneself and experience a renewed sense of meaning and purpose is the ultimate aim, one that continues to unfold over a lifetime.

My hope is to create a relationship between the therapist and the individual that fosters positive and lasting change. To that end, I work patiently to ensure a sense of trust and safety. In addition, I feel I work well with individuals who go to therapy to be challenged, to be "unstuck." In these cases, I can be supportive while also being firm and direct. My approach is sensitive to the individual's life circumstance, their personality, and their comfort level with the therapeutic process.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists
What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?
Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.
What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?
Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.
What kinds of problems does therapy help with?
Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.
What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?
Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
