Substance Use Therapists in Marion County, TN
My primary work today is with those individuals struggling to achieve the best version of themselves. A variety of factors are at play here from past trauma, difficulty connecting, tragic life events, self sabotaging or self destructive coping skills, among others that get in our own way. I offer a place for the individual to explore past patterns and create a new narrative for a new future.

There are several things in my life which drive me to be a counselor. My own past with it struggles, acceptances, failures, and successes drive me to do what I do. I am able to sit in dark places, empathize with struggle and loneliness, and challenge ways of thinking and behaving from a non-judgmental place. I love the unique position a counselor has to problem solve through the failures, walk the uphill road to recovery, and celebrate the success and growth that comes out of the journey.

My therapeutic style is grounded in helping people understand how their patterns formed, and why they tend to repeat patterns even when they’re no longer helpful. I believe insight is not just awareness, but a skill that can be taught, practiced, and strengthened. I am deeply passionate about teaching. Much of my work focuses on psychoeducation: helping clients make sense of their internal experiences in clear, practical ways so change feels attainable rather than overwhelming. When people understand the “why” behind their reactions, they gain more choice in how they respond.

Every person has a unique story regarding their life experiences. These events have shaped the way we perceive ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. Often times, it is difficult to reconcile these beliefs, ideas, and feelings which can keep us feeling lost, discouraged, and unfulfilled. As a counselor I have the privilege to provide a safe space where one can explore and examine their experiences without judgement. Together we work to put the missing pieces together and discover healthy ways to define the best version of you.

It's not very often that males are encouraged to seek help when dealing with the challenges of life. As a result, we resort to age-old adages that tell us to ignore the pain, 'man up', and soldier through it. But the fact of the matter is that we feel, we suffer, and we hurt and it has nothing to do with being a man and everything to do with being a human being. Men want healthy relationships, we want to be happy, we want to feel in control of our lives and be fulfilled. Taking the step towards mental health is an integral part of this process.

You always told yourself that if you just worked hard enough, everything would be fine. As long as you never took any time for yourself, eventually, you’d be happy. But that hasn’t worked. You’ve accomplished a good career, a nice home, and a stable life. But there’s a feeling of emptiness and dissatisfaction you can’t shake. You frequently lose your temper with friends and family. Your significant other complains that you’re distracted and distant. Even the job you’ve always prioritized above all else is falling apart. You know these struggles go back to something from your past, but you don’t understand how.

Living with chronic pain or trauma can feel like carrying an invisible weight that affects your body, emotions, relationships, sleep, energy, and sense of self. You may feel exhausted, misunderstood, or disconnected from who you once were. Pain and trauma often coexist—the body remembers what the mind had to survive, keeping the nervous system on high alert long after danger has passed.
Many of us feel stuck in survival mode, overwhelmed by physical symptoms or emotional pain that’s hard to articulate. If this resonates, know this: I see you, and you’re not alone.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
