My primary work today is with those individuals struggling to achieve the best version of themselves. A variety of factors are at play here from past trauma, difficulty connecting, tragic life events, self sabotaging or self destructive coping skills, among others that get in our own way. I offer a place for the individual to explore past patterns and create a new narrative for a new future.

There are several things in my life which drive me to be a counselor. My own past with it struggles, acceptances, failures, and successes drive me to do what I do. I am able to sit in dark places, empathize with struggle and loneliness, and challenge ways of thinking and behaving from a non-judgmental place. I love the unique position a counselor has to problem solve through the failures, walk the uphill road to recovery, and celebrate the success and growth that comes out of the journey.

My ideal client is someone carrying more than their share; anyone holding things together on the outside while unraveling inside. They’re navigating trauma, anxiety, addiction, relationship strain, or grief, and they’re tired of just surviving. What they want is real change: clarity, peace, connection. They don’t need perfection; they need a place to be real and a guide who won’t flinch. I help people face what hurts, reclaim their worth, and live with courage.

Have you ever thought, I’ll feel better when (fill in the blank) happens. However, every time you think about it the (fill in the blank) never seems to come or has come but you still feel unsettled. Moving through transitions can seem uncomfortable or chaotic at times but so can seeing a therapist. I’ll help you walk through the journey of your transition or current issue usually while wearing one of my many comfortable sweatshirts.

I hear folks on my therapy couch often ask these questions: "Why can't I get a hold on these anxious feelings?" "Why am I still repeating these same patterns?" "Why does (experience) bring up so much (emotion) for me?" I help adults translate this curiosity into insight to develop emotion regulation skills, a sense of self rooted in integrity instead of shame, and more mindfulness in their relationships. I work mostly with anxiety, LGBTQIA+ issues, depression, emotion regulation difficulty, relationship issues, spirituality, and grief, including “identity grief” (grieving the life we thought we’d live).

My vision for counseling is to foster an environment that promotes the client's exploration of resolution to life's problems. I understand that therapy can be a difficult, yet rewarding process. I believe that the real work of therapy must be done by the client, and I work collaboratively with clients to identify therapy goals and the 'roadmap' to the achievement of these goals.

Life is so hard some times. My guess is that you are here because you either are in the middle of the hard or you are no longer willing or able to avoid it. I wish it were easy. I wish our experience wasn't that of hurt, sadness, loss, or any of the other hard things we face. As much as I wish life did not involve this level of pain, I know there is another side to it. I know that love, celebration, joy, peace, and healing exist.

Whether you are facing small problems, or very big ones; whether you are generally confident, or feel that no one cares or could understand your pain, I’m here. And I’ve been there. I worked for years to overcome challenging life issues and situations before studying to become a Professional Clinical Mental Health Counselor, so that I would be qualified to help others do the same. I believe strongly that a better life is out there if you can be courageous enough to try new behaviors, challenge old ways of thinking, and sometimes tolerate uncomfortable emotions. Therapy is not always easy, but it is rewarding, and you're not alone.

I typically work with individuals looking for help in deep self-exploration, recovery, couples conflict, and their family of origin. I thrive as a therapist when we can explore the depths of the soul. By the time we seek help, life has typically not been going as we expected, and we may not be sure who we are. We want to find a way out, but are unsure how to do so. What we need is someone to help guide us through healing. This is a life-long change that will need continued support. We can find healing if we are willing to dare to find it.

We all desire - and deserve - to be seen and celebrated for who we are. However, we can often get in our own way, putting heavy burdens and unrealistic expectations on ourselves and believing them to be true and necessary. We convince ourselves that our lives won’t change, that there’s something wrong with us, or that we don’t deserve better. We hide and twist ourselves to please everyone else, we get really good at pretending, or we start doing things that mask our pain, and we lose ourselves, our joy, and our connection to others in the process. I work with adults and couples in their journey towards healing.

Being a human is hard, and sometimes overwhelmingly hard. Things going on within, around, or to us can challenge how we experience and engage with life and ourselves. Sometimes we need helping in sorting out our thoughts, feelings, and actions in order to find a way to live both comfortably and authentically. Sometimes we need help finding new perspectives and understandings of ourselves, others, or the world. Sometimes we are comfortable within ourselves, but are facing difficulty in interacting with others and need assistance in uncovering friction points. No matter what it is, you’re welcome to explore it with me.

Codependency Therapists
What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
