Life can be confusing and frustrating. Counseling can help you to explore and make decisions towards a healthy future. Taking care of one's emotional health is important, you are worth it. I believe a counselor can be a fresh pair of eyes with the expertise to help one find their way through life's events. Due to COVID-19 concerns sessions are now being offered via tele-health video or telephone.

My primary work today is with those individuals struggling to achieve the best version of themselves. A variety of factors are at play here from past trauma, difficulty connecting, tragic life events, self sabotaging or self destructive coping skills, among others that get in our own way. I offer a place for the individual to explore past patterns and create a new narrative for a new future.

There are several things in my life which drive me to be a counselor. My own past with it struggles, acceptances, failures, and successes drive me to do what I do. I am able to sit in dark places, empathize with struggle and loneliness, and challenge ways of thinking and behaving from a non-judgmental place. I love the unique position a counselor has to problem solve through the failures, walk the uphill road to recovery, and celebrate the success and growth that comes out of the journey.

Anxiety, PTSD, depression and other trauma-related symptoms can improve in incredible ways when we take the time to understand why.
I am certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and also am an EMDRIA-approved consultant and trainer with the Personal Transformation Institute founded by Deborah Kennard and its SAFE (Somatic and Attachment focused) EMDR which helps with clients in particular who may not feel like they have an easily identifiable "trauma."

I often find myself working with individuals who are the helpers among their family or friends. They are the one everyone else comes to talk to or get advice from. They are the ones who are adept at critical thinking and understanding why others are experiencing distress. Maybe they understand themselves pretty well too. But they need someone in their life to focus on them; to understand how they are feeling and why; to help them navigate out of it. I would love to be that person for you. As a helper myself, I know the toll it can take to always be there for everyone else when no one is there for you.

Now serving Tennessee and Colorado residents. Let’s be honest-therapy is uncomfortable! There’s no getting around that squirmy “I can’t believe I have to tell this stranger my problems” feeling. The only way to make progress is to move through those feelings. I am here to be by your side and guide you through the numerous emotions that come up in session. I admire my clients for their ability to face the challenges of therapy with veracity, strength, and sometimes humor. I’m here to make the therapy process marginally less uncomfortable by providing a safe, non-judgmental space along with my therapy dog Jasper.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
