I have worked with those struggling with substance use disorders and consider this my specialty.
Life can be incredibly challenging and isolating. During the daily struggle, we forget that we need validation and support to keep pressing forward. We also do not realize how our past experiences affect our functioning. Sometimes we need external support as well as a compassionate, supportive approach to help us endure and overcome hardships. Regardless of what you're experiencing, you need safe people. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or substance use , I would like to support you in your journey and provide that safety.

I am a therapist who has primarily worked with mothers who have a history of addiction. I am very passionate about working with individuals who are curious about their behavioral patterns, are driven to better themselves by asking those difficult questions, and ready to break generational cycles of trauma or addiction. I believe that addiction and mental health go hand in hand. Although individuals have sought services for substance use , there was work to be done with trauma, depression, anxiety, etc. I primarily work with teens and adults, and I especially enjoy serving the BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and international communities.

I work specifically with individuals who have experienced some type of trauma or struggled with substance use .
Many people have struggled with some form of trauma in their lifetimes. It is pertinent that individuals process that trauma. At Trauma Wellness, we like to look at trauma as a whole. Trauma effects individuals in a number of ways; physical, emotional, and spiritual. I have experience working with individuals who have struggled with substance use or severe abuse. I have worked in EMS for several years so I am experienced in working with first responders and healthcare workers as well. I also have a history working with the legal system.

No matter how many times you get knocked down, you get back up and keep fighting the enemy until it is defeated. The enemy you're trying to defeat might be substance abuse or figuring out how to deal with life after substance abuse. Your enemy may be depression, anxiety, or other mental health diagnoses. It could be recovering from trauma. I can help you find the best ways to move forward and learn to help yourself through building coping skills, learning mindfulness, and increasing self esteem and self worth to live your most fulfilling life.

I understand that life doesn't always go as we planned. But unwanted changes don't define us. I see adaptation as one of our greatest abilities. I believe that we are all are entitled to unconditional positive regard and to be met where we are at in the quest to live our best life. I use a cognitive behavioral approach to increase insight and help you bring about your own positive changes.

I understand how difficult it may be to deal with emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, divorce, trauma, physical or substance abuse along with many other problems that can affect health and well-being. It is my goal to provide the best care for everyone under my counseling, so they can learn how to cope with their different situations healthily. I am familiar with a variety of techniques that can help families get to the source of the issue so we can implement a plan to change severe behavioral problems.

I began my career working in inpatient substance abuse facilities attached to hospitals. I am well-versed in groups for addiction and prefer individual counseling for issues in later recovery or dual diagnosis. I see adults and motivated adolescents in my practice. Both men and women are welcome as are couples and families. Other specialty areas are sexual abuse and mood disorders.

I UNDERSTAND! I understand trauma, addiction and I understand pain. I have been in recovery from substance abuse and everything that comes with it since January of 1991.I know what it means to journey from a place of brokenness to a place of wholeness. Addiction and other maladaptive behaviors are just SYMPTOMS of a deeper rooted problem. If you feel like you KNOW what to do but just cannot seem to make yourself do it chances are you have unprocessed issues. If you are in need of support for yourself, or a loved one I would love to help you navigate the road of this journey.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
