Carrie Joy Counseling
Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, MHSP
2 Endorsed
Knoxville, TN 37921
Carrie's background and training is in Integrative Mental Health for Anxiety and Depression, Gender, and Substance Use (both abstinence and moderation goals) Therapy. After a very rewarding and joyful career of raising five children, Carrie discovered her passion for psychology, therapy, and the clients she has been honoured to work with. Nothing is quite as rewarding as watching a client during an "aha" moment or hearing about a particularly difficult challenge successfully overcome. Nothing touches the soul quite as much as someone trusting you with their deepest of pains.

I strive to provide a safe space for all clients to explore the issues bringing them to therapy and what underlies those issues. As a multicultural/relational therapist identities that are important to you provide a background for therapy (race, religion, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, political affiliations, gender identity, gender, sex, ableness, etc.) as those identities make up who you are. Relationships and how you relate with others are also important. I treat anxiety, depression, grief/loss, phases of life issues, family issues, women's issues and men's issues. I am also a sex and gender specialist.

The areas that I help my clients with are for those dealing with anxiety, depression, codependency, low emotional intelligence, addictions (especially sex/porn addiction), personality disorders and trauma. I find that people are looking for ways to deal and cope with the stress and challenges in their lives and unfortunately most people do not cope with their problems in a healthy way; instead they will find ways to cope by escaping, keeping themselves busy and distracted, basically never dealing directly with the problem and defer it for another time, but that time usually doesn't come.

I work primarily with men, teenagers, and families navigating anxiety, depression, identity concerns, relationship difficulties, and experiences that leave them feeling disconnected from themselves or others. I’m particularly interested in helping clients explore the internal and cultural barriers that can make vulnerability and emotional connection difficult. I also work with individuals processing difficult or painful experiences and exploring how those experiences have shaped their sense of self, relationships, and the way they understand the world.

The stories we tell ourselves about our lives are very powerful. By identifying the narratives that are empowering us and the ones that are causing us harm, we can choose to write a new story, one where we are our most authentic selves. I aim to create an environment conducive to growth with a warm and affirming presence. You are the expert of your experience, and I am here to help reflect your wisdom back to you! I'm currently practicing online in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Colorado.

There are several things in my life which drive me to be a counselor. My own past with it struggles, acceptances, failures, and successes drive me to do what I do. I am able to sit in dark places, empathize with struggle and loneliness, and challenge ways of thinking and behaving from a non-judgmental place. I love the unique position a counselor has to problem solve through the failures, walk the uphill road to recovery, and celebrate the success and growth that comes out of the journey.

FAQ - Therapy for Gambling
How do I know if someone has a gambling problem that could benefit from therapy?
A person with gambling disorder is often in denial of their problem. The individual generally gambles increasing amounts of money to achieve the desired excitement. They are restless or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop gambling. This person may have made unsuccessful repeated attempts to control, cut back, or stop gambling. This individual is often preoccupied with thoughts of past gambling, planning the next activity, and how to get the money needed.

What is an effective treatment for gambling?
Cognitive behavioral therapy is used for many conditions and disorders. CBT concentrates on the individual’s thoughts and behaviors. For example, beliefs about the odds of winning are challenged in therapy. In addition, this type of therapy zeroes in on habits and triggers; it also devises coping strategies when triggers arise. CBT can be effective, but the individual must admit they have a problem, and they must have the desire to stop gambling.

How long does therapy take for gambling disorder?
Recovering from gambling disorder takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but a person can see change if they stick with therapy and if they have the will and desire to stop. Treatment for gambling disorder requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers, as well as the development of coping skills. Making lifestyle changes is also important, such as staying away from lotteries, online gambling, and casinos.

Is relapse a problem for those with a gambling disorder?
Gambling disorder is often chronic and can be life-long; therefore relapse may present a problem for some individuals. But effective treatment can bring a person’s life under control. To remain healthy and on track, the individual may need to regularly check in with their support group or psychotherapist. Frequently refreshing their tools of recovery can be helpful.
