Life can feel like a struggle sometimes. We may have had negative experiences, and may find ourselves stuck in certain patterns or ways of reacting. As a therapist my goals are to explore and validate my clients’ experiences, help them better understand where our patterns come from and help to empower my clients to find new ways to move forward.

My approach is person-centered and rooted in attachment theory, while also utilizing techniques from EMDR and DBT .
Being human is hard. It’s messy. And it can feel totally overwhelming at times. However, when we learn to give voice to these inner experiences, they start to become more manageable. We begin to realize the feelings and symptoms we experience aren’t random, they’re telling us something. As your therapist, I can help you learn how to better connect with, understand, and express painful emotions, while also providing tools to help you cope. Through it all, I will offer you compassion, warmth, empathy - maybe even a well timed curse word if necessary. I’ll bring my whole authentic self to the therapy room and invite you to do the same.

I have had intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy from Marsha Linehan's Behavioral Tech team.
My style balances the comfort of authenticity and genuineness in the therapeutic relationship with the importance of measurable outcomes and evidenced based treatment practices. It is important to me that you and/or your loved one feel as comfortable, safe and unjudged as you can be during our time together. While I work predominantly with adults, I welcome adolescents with issues varying from everyday stressors, poor emotion/behavior management, depression/anxiety and relationship/family issues. Life changes and increased stressors make coping more difficult for all of us. These are the times support is needed most.

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy to work with people of all ages living with struggles such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and low self-esteem.
Brene Brown defines connection as “the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued”. To me, this is counseling in a nutshell. I am passionate about creating this connection. It is my privilege to be able to learn, grow, and help others do the same at Life Connections Counseling. For the past 10 years, I have been a high school Social Studies teacher serving teenagers. From working in a high school classroom to serving at my church with children from preschool to upper elementary, my life has been dedicated to teaching and walking with children and adolescents as they travel along their path.

Accepting New Clients! To have someone open their heart in therapy and trust me with it, is truly an honor. Therapy can be hard. Often times people share things with me they haven’t shared with anyone else. Because of this, I believe the relationship between client and therapist is the most important factor in therapy and what I focus on building first with you. Moreover, I take an integrative approach to therapy, conceptualizing from psychodynamic and interpersonal theories while utilizing interventions from EFT, DBT , CBT and interpersonal theories. All of my work is grounded in multicultural and strength-based views.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
