The areas that I help my clients with are for those dealing with anxiety, depression, codependency, low emotional intelligence, addictions (especially sex/porn addiction), personality disorders and trauma. I find that people are looking for ways to deal and cope with the stress and challenges in their lives and unfortunately most people do not cope with their problems in a healthy way; instead they will find ways to cope by escaping, keeping themselves busy and distracted, basically never dealing directly with the problem and defer it for another time, but that time usually doesn't come.

My style balances the comfort of authenticity and genuineness in the therapeutic relationship with the importance of measurable outcomes and evidenced based treatment practices. It is important to me that you and/or your loved one feel as comfortable, safe and unjudged as you can be during our time together. While I work predominantly with adults, I welcome adolescents with issues varying from everyday stressors, poor emotion/behavior management, depression/anxiety and relationship/family issues. Life changes and increased stressors make coping more difficult for all of us. These are the times support is needed most.

Navigating the sea of life requires a different set of skills throughout life. What works when you are 16 years old doesn’t work so well when you’re 40 years old. Oftentimes when life is passing by so quickly, adapting to the changes requires better-coping skills, skills you've yet to acquire. Or maybe, your teen has all of a sudden became distant, argumentative, and secretive. You’ve tried to be supportive in their growing independence, yet still needing a home base, but the scales aren’t balancing out. This is when you understand that seeking outside intervention is necessary.

Breaking the stigma of mental health begins by choosing to be healthy for yourself. Trusting someone is difficult, especially when struggling with mental health, because it makes us feel vulnerable. Please know vulnerability is not a weakness. My passion is helping, including creating a comfortable space that allows individuals to be their authentic selves. We all have a story that includes various experiences. I enjoy helping individuals to gain an understanding of their stories to provide them with clarity and empowerment. My experience includes domestic violence, trauma, anxiety, depression, and personality disorders.

I serve individuals who have encountered trauma in their lives. They typically struggle with getting easily triggered and being in fight, flight or freeze mode a lot of the time. It often feels like anxiety so many of my clients come in saying they suffer with anxiety. Many of my clients also struggle with making decisions.

Life can be incredibly challenging and isolating. During the daily struggle, we forget that we need validation and support to keep pressing forward. We also do not realize how our past experiences affect our functioning. Sometimes we need external support as well as a compassionate, supportive approach to help us endure and overcome hardships. Regardless of what you're experiencing, you need safe people. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or substance use, I would like to support you in your journey and provide that safety.

Life transitions can be complicated. Sometimes, the most exciting changes can be the most difficult. Fear of change can result in anxiety, depression, panic attacks, acting out behaviors, or abuse of substances/alcohol. I work with clients to reduce symptoms that can often be associated with life transitions. I use cognitive behavioral, solution focused, and reality based therapies with my clients to assist in improving communication, increasing coping skills, and to enhance work, school, or home relationships.

Life is experienced in relation to other people-Optimal functioning occurs within the context of relationships. To achieve this, I use a Cyclical Psychodynamic approach. This is an integrative approach to therapy, which combines the most effective parts of empirically supported therapies- relational psychodynamics, cognitive-behavioral therapy, attachment theory, and family systems theory. It works by creating corrective emotional experiences in therapy and developing new ways of interacting with others outside of therapy. This process facilitates increased awareness, resilience, better strategies, and increased effectiveness.

My ideal client is one who is curious about his/her emotional life. My treatment philosophy is to engage a person in an exploration of their problems in ways that can lead to better relationships, feelings about themselves, and overall day-to-day functioning. My patients should find relief from their symptoms - whatever they may be - while making changes that will help them stay emotionally healthy and symptom-free in the long-term. It is my belief that therapy is a growth process that can only happen by collaboration and genuine trust between patient and therapist.

Borderline Personality (BPD) Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating borderline personality disorder?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is considered the gold standard of treatment for borderline personality disorder. An evidence-based treatment, it addresses the extreme emotional reactivity, the relationship difficulties, and the acts of self-harm that create so much distress for BPD patients. DBT is a comprehensive program that includes both regular individual psychotherapy sessions and weekly group sessions of skills training.

What happens in treatment of borderline personality disorder?

Treatment typically consists of weekly individual therapy sessions that last an hour and group skill-focused instructional sessions that may last up to two hours. Patients are typically given homework “assignments” in which they are asked to practice in their daily life the skills they acquire in therapy. Patients also keep a diary tracking their emotions and impulses as a way to know which situations are most problematic and to help them gain control over their own behavior. Difficult situations and feelings are typically reviewed in therapy sessions and more constructive solutions found.

What kinds of problems does BPD treatment help with?

DBT was initially developed to dampen the self-destructive impulses of chronically suicidal patients. It is now the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder, a serious condition marked by extreme emotional reactivity, relationship instability, and self-injurious behaviors. Treatment of BPD helps patients tolerate the flux of emotions without acting on them, often with a specific focus on tolerating negative emotions. DBT addresses the core problems of BPD—fear of abandonment, low self-esteem, and impulsivity.

What is the goal of treatment in borderline personality disorder?

The goal of treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is to relieve the extreme emotional distress that patients experience—to curb their emotional reactivity, to minimize their inclination to self-harm, and to reduce their impulsivity. Toward these ends, patients are not only taught an array of new coping skills and techniques for emotional regulation, they are given opportunities to practice them. Another major goal of treatment is interpersonal effectiveness; patients learn and problem-solve ways to effectively communicate in relationships, especially how to ask for what they need as a way to minimize hurt feelings.
