I am committed to working with children, adolescents, individuals and families who are in the midst of seeking understanding and guidance on the path towards healing. Everyone has a story to tell, and everyone deserves to be heard. When traumatic experiences occur, they can alter our view of ourselves and the world. Through therapy, we can work together to rewrite these narratives and beliefs. Who you are is greater than what you've done or had happen to you. I have worked intensely with trauma across the lifespan, adolescent and adult addiction and recovery, and a variety of mood and anxiety disorders.

I welcome adolescent and adult clients, as well as couples and children.
Finding a therapist that is a good fit for you is pivotal to a beneficial and meaningful experience in therapy. A strong therapeutic relationship is the vehicle for change and the strongest predictor of treatment success. My international education encouraged me to adopt a flexible, curious, and inclusive perspective on the factors that contribute to one's identity and difficulties (e.g., religion, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, etc.). I strive to create a safe and non-judgmental space to support clients' introspective journeys, exploration of identities, and understanding of the self, others, and the world.

Knowing there is someone to come alongside as your child or teen wrestles with the normal changes of life and any extra challenges that appear can bring hope to everyone.

I will work with your teen to develop the tools he or she needs to make it through a very difficult time in life.
People tell me that I’m easy to talk to. But I don’t just listen. I help you find out how the ways you are thinking or interacting are causing you problems, and I offer observations and possible solutions. You and I collaborate to figure out what solutions may fit for you, and how to make them work in your life. Together we build an understanding of what you are going through, and together we tackle the issues. Rather than relying on manualized “copy and paste” therapeutic approaches, my suggestions and observations are based on an in-depth understanding of you and your situation.

Have you experienced a trauma in your life which you are finding to be difficult to cope with? Are you noticing your past wounds are impacting who you are today? Moving forward after a traumatic event can be difficult. I aim to provide my clients with a secure and accepting environment. My ideal client would come to session ready to process difficult things while they curl up on my couch and feel at home in my office space. Although I have seen clients of all ages and diagnoses, I feel the most comfortable with teen and adult aged clients who are currently experiencing PTSD, anxiety, and/or depression.

I work with issues including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, trauma, family conflict, grief/loss, self-harm, divorce, college stress and adolescent issues.
I know that change can be hard, and that making the decision to call a therapist is difficult. I believe that we are all capable and deserving of living our best life, and that feeling safe and supported makes it easier to make those changes. Life can be messy, and I am here to help. I have a passion for helping others, and am grateful I get to be a part of that change process. I utilize an individual approach to meet the needs of each client, and want each client to feel heard, valued, and understood.

Navigating the sea of life requires a different set of skills throughout life. What works when you are 16 years old doesn’t work so well when you’re 40 years old. Oftentimes when life is passing by so quickly, adapting to the changes requires better-coping skills, skills you've yet to acquire. Or maybe, your teen has all of a sudden became distant, argumentative, and secretive. You’ve tried to be supportive in their growing independence, yet still needing a home base, but the scales aren’t balancing out. This is when you understand that seeking outside intervention is necessary.

I focus on couples, family, and adolescent counseling.
We all experience anxiety, depression, grief, and loneliness at times. And we all struggle with memories from childhood that greatly influence our thinking. These things make up many of the stories we use to control how we feel about the quality of our lives. Changing those stories can help you build the life you desire.

I am particularly skilled working alongside pre-adolescents, adolescent , young adult females, and parents of teens, who feel stuck and in the trenches of family dynamics, significant relationships, life circumstances, and/or mental health conditions. Your teen may be desperately trying to find an outlet to channel their feelings. Are they overachievers pouring all their energy into school or sports? Does your teen feel lost, anxious, confused, or indecisive? Perhaps they bottle their anger, cut, or show you their rebellious side.

Currently accepting new clients! If your child or teen is going through a difficult season or needs help managing big emotions, it helps to have a therapist partner with you to find ways to support them. Traditional talk therapy can be difficult for young children because their capacity for verbal processing is limited. I use expressive modalities including play therapy, art, and sand tray to connect with children and teens where they are and to help them process emotions and develop effective coping skills. I am also a registered Circle of Security Parenting facilitator and can provide classes in the Knoxville, Tennessee area.

We are all confronted with our vulnerability in the midst of life's challenges. I have a deep passion for helping you navigate through that vulnerability in a safe environment. I have worked with individuals from elementary age through mature adults with an emphasis on adolescent years. Regardless of your stage in life, I believe therapy should be a safe space that allows you to come exactly as you are, wherever you might find yourself on a sometimes difficult journey.

I started Aptitude Behavioral Services, LLC to service school-age children in the East TN area. I love working with children through pre- teen ages and have also worked with a few higher-functioning teenagers. My typical day involves working with families that face challenges with behavior and working directly with children to decrease these behaviors while building skill deficits. I enjoy including family in my sessions and want to empower caregivers and family members so that they are equipped to handle behavioral challenges.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
