As humans, we will often come across emotions and experiences that are difficult to manage. Maybe we didn't learn how to process this information, or it might be difficult to do it alone. Everyone lives a unique life with unique experiences, so learning how we view ourselves and others can help us understand what is needed for our individual healing process.

I am a counselor that values the depth of human relationships. I use a variety of therapeutic interventions that can be summarized as somatic and attachment focused, relational, and mindful. All of these interventions are built off of the idea of present moment awareness. This means that I use each moment as potential for awareness into your inner experience. I spend time assisting each client in expanding their window of tolerance for discomfort as well as developing tools and techniques for structural changes. I am experienced working with general mental health concerns as well as trauma, PTSD, and associated concerns.

Kelsey works with individuals, adolescents, and adults. She believes that we live in stories. It is through relationships, conversations, and stories that we create meaning in life. By examining the stories we tell ourselves, re-authoring them, and externalizing problems, then we can construct new and liberating stories. In counseling, Kelsey uses narrative therapy to engage with clients in the stories of their lives. She focuses on building an atmosphere of curiosity, respect, and transparency. She believes individuals matter, bearing witness to stories matters, and that individuals have strengths and the power to change.

All of us can identify times when we want more for ourselves but can't seem to make it happen. Things get in the way - busy schedules, stress, fatigue, fear, emotional blocks and old patterns. It's ok. It's not you. We are not meant to heal and grow on our own, and we never really reach the end. Second Nature Therapy offers a safe, supportive system of care for healing your wounds, growing your strengths, identifying your values and vision, and building habits that become "second nature" to nurturing your best life.

Is the past influencing your present life? I have discovered that so many of us have a hard time living in the present because of things from our past... or we struggle because we don't believe we are "good enough." I have been practicing for 13 years. I am trained in EMDR and believe everyone can grow, heal, and live fulfilling lives. My greatest joy is seeing my clients redefine who they are according to their values...Being able to be authentic. No longer confined to the pressures, ideals and expectations of others or shackled to the past.

Life can be incredibly difficult, even in the best of times, due to everyday challenges or simply existing as your authentic self. For some, this may look like a relationship with multiple partners, being aromantic or asexual, having a relationship with yourself, learning more about yourself and how you engage in sexuality via integrating kink, or simply existing in life in a marginalized body - be it race, gender, sexuality, weight, ability status, or any number of visible and invisible characteristics for which broader society struggles to make space.

I work primarily with adults, many of whom are neurodivergent. As a neurodiversity affirming therapist, I do not see Autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent experiences as something to be "fixed," I see them as something to be explored, accepted, and affirmed. My own experience as a neurodivergent person has been invaluable in guiding my understanding. I am also passionate about my work with overwhelmed parents and caregivers, those with chronic health conditions, and people navigating their way through various life transitions.

Life can present many challenges that impact our sense of self, trust, and safety. As a therapist, I prioritize creating a safe, supportive, and accepting space for my clients. In this place, I find that we're able to grow, heal, and begin to live the life we want to live. I am grateful to have a role where I can create a space for my clients to be heard, validated, and accepted, exactly as they are. When we are met with challenges, it is important to have relationships that help propel us forward and it's my honor to provide that space for my clients.

Hi! I work with adolescents, young adults, and young couples. Often my clients are navigating transitions, identify formation, and just generally hard life stuff. I help clients who are developing independence and building a confident identity. For couples, we work on learning to blend two identities into one relationship. I love seeing my clients gently but confidently confront difficult emotions, behaviors, and relationships. I will help you make sense of what's happened, identify what could be, and empathize and support you while you make it happen.

So, you’ve stepped back, looked at your relationships, and realized, “This is not even close to what I want!” UGH! What a moment. A part of you might even chime in to (not so helpfully) remind you that you should just be happy with what you have, especially since it could totally be worse. Maybe that part even suggests this is somehow as good as it gets for you. (Side note, this is your critical voice, and it tends to share, shall we call it “fake news.”) But you’re here because a part of you, even if it’s small and hesitant, wants something more. It feels scary to hope, but you’re here to try.

Everyone has a unique mental health journey. My main goal as a counselor is to meet people where they are at, and help them work toward their goals for growth and well-being. By establishing a safe, welcoming environment, and forming a solid therapeutic connection, I hope to provide a context where people can explore their experiences in life, their questions about life, and the changes they want to implement without fear of judgment.

How can I find a therapist in Johnson City?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
