Have you ever driven a fully-loaded 15-passenger van? As drivers in that situation, when we look in the rearview mirror, the only thing we can see is the passengers. We can't see outside. The side-view mirror offers minimal help. We have a HUGE blindspot. If we are in the left lane of the interstate and want to move to the right, the best thing to do is ask the "shotgun" rider to check. A counselor functions much like that: helping us check our blindspots.

If you see yourself in any or all of these statements: an adult feeling unsure or unsupported while navigating grief and loss. You're stuck, overwhelmed, or lost during a transition in relationships, career, while exploring "who am I, really?", or while exploring the bigger questions in life. Maybe you're struggling with ADHD and its affect on adulting, your job, relationships and creativity. Asking yourself how to manage it all?! If you're having a difficult time answering "When was the last time I felt present, connected, joyful, or in awe?" then we may be a good fit.

Being a person is hard. We often don’t know we need help until we are either suffering badly or in crisis and can’t get out using the tools and knowledge we have. I am here to help. Asking for help is the first, and typically the hardest step in the healing journey. If it were easy, everyone would do it. I am confident in my skills to both hold space and help guide you in healing through whatever struggles you are facing currently. I believe self-compassion is the gateway to progress, and mindfulness is a central tenet in my practice.

I love helping clients make sense of their hidden stories and experiences. Often, these create chaos, make us unsure, and throw us off balance. I believe that everyone needs a comfortable place to rediscover balance and wholeness through unraveling their stories. While I see a variety of clients, I love married couples struggling with intimacy, mixed neurotype couples, adhd, autism, as well as singles and women who have experienced sexual trauma. I also have experience with Homeschool culture and the struggles and wins of the music industry. I offer flexible office hours including Saturdays.

In my 50+ years I have personally experienced a lot of things that my clients share with me. I am able to empathize or and the very least identify with my client`s needs. My approach is Person/Client Centered; Person-centered therapy uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions. The therapist acts as a compassionate facilitator, listening without judgment and acknowledging the client’s experience without moving the conversation in another direction. The therapist is there to encourage and support the client.

Hi, I’m Dave. Instead of an inspirational quote or profound thought, I will simply say that life can be really hard sometimes. I would be honored to have a chance to sit down across from you and hear your story. Perhaps in that space we can find some traction, hope, or restoration. I’vebeen working with folks in Nashville for 9 years full-time. I currently work full time at a Nashville University as a LMFT and have a small private practice I do Thursday afternoons. I do offer in person and HIPPA compliant virtual sessions for those residing in the state of TN.

I support couples who want to strengthen communication and emotional safety in their relationships. In addition, I specialize in helping adults heal from childhood trauma and anxiety disorders that make daily life feel overwhelming. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling stuck in old patterns like people-pleasing, perfectionism, or constant worry, and are ready to understand where these patterns began and how to finally move forward.

Have you ever looked at your life and thought, how did I get here? You tell yourself this time will be different, but the stress, the cravings, and the chaos keep showing up. You want to get clean, or maybe you already have, but it still feels like you’re fighting to stay afloat. You’ve lost people. You’ve lost trust. You don’t even recognize yourself these days anymore. If that’s where you are, I get it because I’ve lived it. I’ve been in recovery myself for over twelve years, and I know what it’s like to fight addiction, survive domestic violence, deal with court dates, and try to rebuild a life from scratch.

We will also work together to increase mindfulness and self-compassion and strengthen the relationships in your life.

LGBTQ+ Therapists
Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?
Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.
Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.
How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?
Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.
Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?
While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
