With couples, I utilize
Emotionally Focused
Therapy, a research-validated approach to healing and strengthening couples’ relationships and emotional connection.
My hope is to meet with clients of all ages who find themselves scrambling for health and wholeness and whatever that means to them. I believe there is immense power in feeling safe and known and that our wounds and victories both impact our thought processes, relationships, emotions, and behaviors. In life transitions, relational difficulties, and personal struggles, I aim to be an agent of hope and compassion that moves clients towards greater awareness and confidence, and away from self-defeating processes of shame and feelings of unworthiness. As a result, the health of body, mind, soul, and relationships improves.

Too often we live life in the fog of good health and favorable circumstances. But then, inevitably, something happens. Something difficult and hard to understand that pushes to the forefront the need for wisdom. Is there hope? On whom can I depend? What am I living for? What matters? Will I live? How will I live? Author and poet Wendell Berry said: "It may be that when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings."

"Anything that's human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone" -- Fred Rogers. This is exactly what the therapeutic relationship provides.

"I need something to change" is a great place to start. Counseling can be a place to facilitate this change. You may find that you are speaking one language while your spouse is speaking another. You can learn how to have a common language and corrective experiences that draw you closer together instead of further apart. Many of your wounds occurred in relationships, thus it is in relationships where they can be restored. I have served individuals and couples in a helping profession for nearly 30 years. You can find practical solutions as well as deep soul and relational change. Though not easy, real change is possible.

I believe that walking alongside hurting individuals, couples, and families is a crucial element on the path to healing. Brokenness, chaos, shattered relationships, and loss are often concealed gifts of transformation. People who have experienced trauma resulting in attachment struggles, addictions, anxiety, codependency and relational conflict are common to the individuals I see. Keith, my husband, and I offer couples and family therapy together as we feel that it is effective and expedient. When I am not counseling with my husband, I work with individuals and families who are in crisis and are desperate for change.

Emotionally Focused Therapists
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
