First Responder? You spend the majority of your time at work "ON," ready for the next call or incident with little to no time to decompress. You witness more traumatic events in a week (maybe even a day) than most people see in a lifetime. Continuous response to traumatic events over time has a profound effect on the autonomic nervous system so much so you can find yourself feeling exhausted emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually. You may have difficulty unwinding or getting sleep without the use of social media, alcohol, drugs, sex, porn, video games, gambling, shopping, food to numb the emotions or sensations in the body.

Feeling distant or stuck in your relationship? Maybe trust has been broken, or every conversation seems to turn into an argument. Even once-loving couples can start living like polite roommates—hurt, lonely, and unsure how to reconnect. I’m one of only three therapists living in Tennessee certified in the Gottman Method for couples therapy—a research-based approach that helps most couples rebuild closeness and communication. I also work with individuals damaged by depression, anxiety or trauma. In my Brentwood office or by tele-health, sessions can usually begin in one week with evening and weekend availability.

Each of us shapes and is shaped by the relationships we have with others, with our bodies, with our stories, with our cultures, and with our worlds. We find ourselves here and now because of where we’ve been and what has happened, because of how we carry our experiences forward and how they have made us. I am awed by the creative resilience with which we integrate or shoulder the burdens we’ve felt. I find astonishing and courageous the ways in which we not only survive, but find ways to thrive, to express ourselves, and live into the fullness of human experience despite those things that have hurt us and that hurt us now.

When you cut a tree down and look at the growth rings added every year, you can see the way fire, water, wind, and people have impacted its life each year. I believe that people are no different. Our environment shapes us, and nevertheless we grow. Some years are harder than others, but even within the hard years, growth takes place.

CLARITY, PEACE of MIND, CONFIDENCE, JOY and a SKILL SET by which to create and sustain a happier, healthier life, sound good? Let's face it, despite our best efforts life gets crazy at times. We can ride the slow gradual wave of disconnectedness until one day we wake up wondering "How the heck did I get here?!" Without warning we find ourselves in what I call an "uncomfortable comfortable." This turbulence is a result of life unfolding in ways we never imagined. Situations we've tried our best to "deal with" because "that's just life."

From the outside it may look like you have things under control, but internally it feels like you're furiously scrambling to keep up, or just catch your breath. You've likely prided yourself on being self-sufficient, independent, or the one that other people come to with their problems.
But you're starting to realize that it's hard to show up for yourself and others when you feel like you're drowning.
You need (and want!) MORE...
More connection, more clarity, more space, more happiness, and more peace.
And LESS...
Less loneliness, confusion, apathy, anxiety, and shame.

Infidelity Therapists
How does therapy for infidelity work?
A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.
How long does therapy for infidelity take?
Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.
How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?
When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.
How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?
Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
