Hi, my name is Denise Walker. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor/Mental Health Service Provider in Tennessee. Counseling is first a relationship between you and me. I will listen, be compassionate, and be curious about who are and your hopes for counseling. Second, I will use my knowledge and experience to pull from my counseling toolbox as I believe every person is unique and one size does not fit all. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, want to make a change in your life, or simply need someone to talk to, I am here.

Psychotherapy (and mental health treatment in general) should be accessible, affordable and - most of all - effective. That is my belief and my commitment, and it shapes how I approach my work as a clinician. I love helping clients who are stuck but also ready to explore new ways to move forward. Whether it's sadness that won't go away, debilitating anxiety, or the profound impact of traumatic stressors, I have years of experience and advanced training that I draw upon to help clients chart new pathways.

Everyone wants to be themselves, to be “seen,” and to be valued for their uniqueness. We’re wired to need safe and affirming relationships and connection with others. When we’re struggling, it’s usually because something has gotten in the way of these things - not because we’re somehow "defective" or "flawed." I value authenticity, and strive to help clients feel and honor emotions that may seem “wrong" or unacceptable.

I work with individuals and couples dealing with perinatal concerns, parenting stress and caring for family with medical or mental health needs. I frequently support helping professionals, like healthcare workers, legal professionals or teachers who are coping with trauma or burnout. Creating a place where you can explore your thoughts and feelings free of judgement is my first priority. I believe therapy should not feel intimidating, and that bringing warmth and humor into the process helps to keep us engaged and moving forward.

I work with adult individuals looking to address trauma / PTSD, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, life transitions, identity development, and self-care and personal growth. In our first session together, I like to get a sense of what you're looking to gain from therapy and create a personalized treatment plan to meet those goals. A big part of my approach to therapy is establishing a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental environment where we can work through anything. My motto for therapy is "if we don't laugh, we'll cry, but we can do both!"

One of the most powerful steps we can take in life is choosing to heal. Whether you’re navigating trauma, anxiety, grief, or long-held patterns that no longer serve you, I love helping people find clarity, relief, and a renewed sense of self through deep, meaningful therapeutic work. We all carry the weight of past experiences, some of which have shaped us in ways we don’t fully understand until we begin to slow down and pay attention.

At work, you’re thriving! You can handle anything that comes your way. Whenever there’s a problem, you’re the one who fixes it. It’s your show and you’re killing it. So why do you feel so unfulfilled? On paper, you’re successful – making your family proud. But inside, something is still missing. A longing emptiness sits deep in the pit of your stomach. You’ve always worked so hard to pursue goals “at any cost,” but you’ve begun to realize that the cost was your well-being. All of your relationships seem to be out of obligation. You never have any time to care for yourself...Unless something changes, things will only get worse...

My ideal client is thoughtful, capable, and often seen as “put together”; yet something feels off inside. They may feel disconnected from their body, frustrated in their relationship, or unsure how to express desire without shame. They want more: deeper connection, honest intimacy, and permission to rediscover themselves. They’re tired of masking, minimizing, or settling. Their goal is to feel whole, seen, and sexually alive. They seek a space that’s affirming, confidential, and attuned to their inner experience; where they can finally say what hasn’t been said. My practice is free from judgement and open for exploration.

You've built a life that looks successful from the outside: the career, the reputation, the achievements. But underneath all of it, something isn't working, and it's been that way for a long time. Maybe it's the anxiety that never fully stops. The patterns you keep repeating no matter how hard you try. The exhaustion of performing a version of yourself that was built to survive. You've tried to out-work it, out-think it, out-achieve it. Yet, you're still here. You probably worry that there's just something inherently wrong with you and it will always be like this. What if it's a wound asking to be seen and healed instead?

My ideal client has been through difficult experiences — trauma, loss, relationship struggles, or the weight of a personality disorder or addiction — and is ready to start making sense of it all. They may be an adolescent navigating a turbulent season of life, an adult who has carried pain for too long, or a couple or family ready to rebuild connection. They want more than just symptom relief; they want to understand themselves, heal at the root, and create lasting change. They may also be someone from the LGBTQI community seeking a therapist who truly sees and welcomes them as they are.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists
How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
