Throughout my career as a counselor I have had the opportunity to help others who are working through anxiety disorders, mood disorders, addictions, marital and relational conflict, vocational and career issues, and issues related to disability.
As a clinical counselor and pastor I value creating space for intentional listening to discover and discern how personal uniqueness can find expression within the contours of life. I work collaboratively with individuals, families and adolescents to grow awareness around the stories we tell ourselves. Sometimes these are strong, positively thick stories, and I enjoy celebrating progression with another when this occurs. More often than not in counseling, I find that our normal human experiences bring with them the challenge of embracing life as it actually is.

You are doing a brave thing. Anxiety , panic attacks, and depression can play a role in keeping us from seeking help outside of our known comfort zone. But there is help available, and hope for a better life. I specialize in working with anxiety , depression, and trauma and PTSD symptoms. We may cope in ways that work in the moment, but come back in the form of panic attacks, isolation, fatigue, lack of focus, appetite changes, difficulty staying motivated, and feeling constantly on edge or numb. If anxiety is hindering your quality of life, or your depression is too heavy to carry alone, welcome. This is a safe place to unpack these.

I work primarily with young adults and couples, and topics I am particularly passionate about include religious trauma, relational difficulties, gender and sexuality issues, anxiety , and family conflict.
You are struggling to reconcile your past with who you are today. An unaddressed traumatic event. A childhood you wish you could change. A parent whose actions you don't understand. Shame is beginning to control you, and the reality of your past is impacting your relationships and quality of life today. You aren’t confident that therapy could help, but at this point you're willing to try anything. You are deserving of the time and energy it takes to heal. As your therapist, I hope to help you hold in tension the reality of your past, while encouraging you to find hope for your future.

I specialize in anxiety , OCD, family relationships, loneliness, trauma, depression, relational issues, spirituality/faith, life transitions, and identity.
The couples and individuals I work with come to therapy feeling isolated, undervalued, and unheard. If you are tired of not feeling good enough, ashamed, or angry, my hope is to help you rediscover what love means, heal your connection within yourself and each other, and create a new chapter of your story. I practice with couples and individuals from a client-focused perspective of unconditional acceptance- no matter what you bring to therapy, it has a place. I have hope that we can discover the tools together to process, heal, and journey forward finding the version of yourself that you want to be.

My goal is to help you increase your feelings of self-worth, value, and self-esteem by exploring the emotions you're experiencing, lowering anxiety /depression, creating coping skills, and improving your ability to have healthy relationships.
Relationships build the context of our lives. We learn who we are from those around us. This exchange has the power to influence our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves. While relationships have the beautiful ability to build us up, encourage us, and support us, they also have the reverse effect. Have you ever been in a relationship that tore you down, made you question your worth, damaged your self-esteem, or left you wondering why you weren't enough? Have these unhealthy or toxic relationships hindered your ability to seek out and sustain a healthy one? This story doesn't have to be yours forever and you're not alone.

Anxiety has started to overwhelm your life. You wake up every morning with this anxious feeling in your gut that you can’t seem to shake. It feels like it's sucking all of the oxygen out of your life. You're overwhelmed, full of self-doubt, and overall, exhausted. On top of that, you strive to perfect everything you do, and when you fall short, it only feels to reinforce this idea that you’ll never be good enough. Complicate that with being a young woman who is already flooded with negative messages that seem to validate your fears , and it feels like a recipe that is headed for disaster. You know there's more to life than this.

Some of the more common problems addressed here are high anxiety , dysphoria/depression, attention deficit issues, post-traumatic stress, brain/memory dysfunction, relationship issues, communication issues, sadness/grief, and recovery from major illness or injury.
I provide counseling and consultative services. With the help of my colleague, Mark Shively, we also provide training using biofeedback technology. As a counselor, my role is to listen, discern strengths and vulnerabilities, and invite growth/advancement from those placing trust in my care. As a consultant, I strive to provide fair/impartial answers (in the manner of a scientist) to posed questions. Cognitive-behavioral training can address many thought patterns, behaviors and physiological states (such as stress).

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
