Some of the more common problems addressed here are high anxiety, dysphoria/depression,
attention deficit
issues, post-traumatic stress, brain/memory dysfunction, relationship issues, communication issues, sadness/grief, and recovery from major illness or injury.
I provide counseling and consultative services. With the help of my colleague, Mark Shively, we also provide training using biofeedback technology. As a counselor, my role is to listen, discern strengths and vulnerabilities, and invite growth/advancement from those placing trust in my care. As a consultant, I strive to provide fair/impartial answers (in the manner of a scientist) to posed questions. Cognitive-behavioral training can address many thought patterns, behaviors and physiological states (such as stress).

Specific areas of interest for me include autism spectrum disorder, educational disorders,
ADHD
, anxiety, and behavioral challenges.
Watching your child struggle behaviorally, emotionally, or academically, can be a very scary thing for a parent. You may feel lost and insecure, or you may feel like you have tried everything and nothing seems to work. Additionally, you may have struggled as a kid yourself but have never been able to pinpoint why. I believe through evaluation, one can better understand who they are, how to build on existing strengths, and how to target areas for growth.

When someone is experiencing life stressors and hard times it can become difficult to have hope for happier days. It can be a hard journey to take in being able to learn how to cope with these stressors and find hope that one needs in order to live a healthier, happy life. It is my goal as your counselor to provide a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment for someone to take this journey. I look forward to empowering people to grow as individuals and reach their goals that will help them to live a more meaningful life.

“Has life got you down?” That classic question that we all come back to when things just seem a bit too crazy. The question that we’ve heard so many times, even when we were a kid. So let me ask you, has life got you down? Do you feel like your life has transitioned to a place where you feel lost, alone, or quite like nobody really understands what it’s like to be in your shoes? Has anxiety, depression, relational issues or trauma, family conflict or parenting issues beaten you down? Let me ask you one last question: is the idea of therapy terrifying? If you answered yes to any of these questions, please believe me, there’s a way.

You have found the courage to begin, and you want someone to walk with you. Maybe you are tired of feeling the crushing weight of anxiety or depression. Maybe you are the parent of a child with special needs, and you don't know what to do next, but you know you need to do something. Maybe you are finally admitting to yourself the truth about your sexuality, spirituality, or situation, and you are ready to grow into the person you are meant to be. I would be honored to join you on your journey.

As a clinical counselor and pastor I value creating space for intentional listening to discover and discern how personal uniqueness can find expression within the contours of life. I work collaboratively with individuals, families and adolescents to grow awareness around the stories we tell ourselves. Sometimes these are strong, positively thick stories, and I enjoy celebrating progression with another when this occurs. More often than not in counseling, I find that our normal human experiences bring with them the challenge of embracing life as it actually is.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
