Feeling distant or stuck in your relationship? Maybe trust has been broken, or every conversation seems to turn into an argument. Even once-loving couples can start living like polite roommates—hurt, lonely, and unsure how to reconnect. I’m one of only three therapists living in Tennessee certified in the Gottman Method for couples therapy—a research-based approach that helps most couples rebuild closeness and communication. I also work with individuals damaged by depression, anxiety or trauma. In my Brentwood office or by tele-health, sessions can usually begin in one week with evening and weekend availability.

I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist, as well as the founder of Ascend Therapy Nashville. I believe therapy is both an art and a science, and it’s my role to create a warm, welcoming, and effective environment for your work. While not an exact science, therapy is most helpful when grounded in solid evidence. I help you rediscover your values, build new tools and insights, and take committed action. I draw from several evidence-based approaches—in other words, I do therapy that works.

Life can be complicated, and sometimes the things we struggle with aren’t easy to untangle on our own. Mental and emotional challenges come from a mix of life experiences, environment, genetics, and our own readiness or ability to make changes. Counseling gives us a place to slow down, make sense of those things, and better understand why we feel or react the way we do. Through that process, people often develop greater self-awareness and experience real emotional and mental growth.

Have you been wounded? Many wounds occurred through relationships, and it is through relationship where they can be restored. Though not easy, many of those I work with begin to take risks, experience more meaningful relationships, and even a greater sense of joy in life. Real change is possible and I'd love to walk that path with you.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
