Therapy. That can be a pretty scary idea. For some there's still a stigma attached to pursuing professional counseling...you have to be crazy, right? Believe it or not, the healthiest, most courageous people I know are in counseling. Why? People in counseling recognize that there is a problem, are willing to work hard to find a solution, and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty in the process. I can't promise you that therapy is easy but I can promise I'll get my hands dirty right along with you. Make the investment in yourself today.

Therapy can help you overcome challenges such as addressing negative feelings, making behavioral change, managing a transition, or dealing with grief, loss, and trauma. Therapy is also a great place to learn about strengthening relationships, setting goals, and challenging yourself to be the person you want to be. I have been working with and advocating for individuals, children, and families since 2005. I welcome all clients, but found my techniques to be particularly helpful in working with anxiety, depression, life transition, trauma history, PTSD, grief or loss, and couple & family dynamic issues.

I specialize in working with people who are noticing how the negative events and memories of the past are affecting their present lives. This may present as addictions, relational strain, anxiety, stress, or depression. Together we will explore these past events in order for you to write a new story decreasing the intensity of emotions attached to those incidents. I connect with those who identify as Third Culture Children or Cross Cultural Individuals. I strongly empathize with those who identify with multiple cultural aspects. I find that developing your identity while processing through all the layers of life can be challenging.

We all want to be known; to be seen and heard and understood by others. We may also need help learning to understand ourselves and our needs as well as the needs of those we interact with. The connections we form with our families, our friends, coworkers and significant others can bring great fulfillment to our lives, or they can be a source of struggle, leaving us wanting more. Starting therapy is the first brave step in improving the quality of your relationships, including the relationship with yourself!

At times when we feel overwhelmed, it seems easiest to escape or run away. The challenge with this is that even with a fresh start, the emotions still linger. I would like to sit with you and process these uncomfortable feelings and find ways to cope with seemingly impossible circumstances. I enjoy working with clients of all ages and backgrounds. I work from a person-centered approach, believing my clients have the skills and strength within to grow and thrive.

So many pictures. So many profiles to navigate. This must feel like the online dating version of finding a therapist. Look, life is difficult. It's genuinely stressful. However, just because you know these things, doesn't make it easier to deal with. You're here now because you've had enough and want better for yourself; you want more out of life.

If you're longing for deeper joy, intentionality, purpose, and wholeness in your life, today is a good day to begin. It can be difficult to prioritize yourself in the craziness of life and everything you already hold… but the benefits stretch so far beyond yourself to everyone you interact with, and especially to the ones you love most. I enjoy working with couples and individuals of many backgrounds who are experiencing challenges: life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief, and relationship conflict or distance, among others.

While clients report concerns about depression, anxiety, addictions, relationships, etc., they are often laboring under the impact of past and/or present dysfunctional relationships. These hurts and difficulties give rise to symptoms that provoke seeking help and relief. By courageously exploring these relationships, understanding their thoughts and emotions, my clients often find new freedom to live loving and purposeful lives. I have been helping adults, teens and couples find increasing freedom for over 30 years.

Trying to balance relationships, work, the demands of everyday life, and stay grounded in your own identity can be exhausting. In today's constantly moving society, many of us find we have little time to care for ourselves, or even think of what we can do to replenish our cups. Many of my clients seem to be more sensitive to the world around them, and experience big shifts in mood, or intense emotional processes. With the constant stimulation happening around us, this can lead to perpetual feelings of stress and burnout, anxiety, depression, tension in relationships, and a lost sense of self or meaning in life.

I am a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist specializing in assessing adults with concerns about their memory and other cognitive abilities. Although my clinical interests are broad, I am particularly passionate about reducing risk for cognitive decline and improving overall health through lifestyle modification. I have lectured extensively on the power that exercise, healthy diet, quality sleep, psychological well-being, and staying cognitively and socially active have on maintaining/improving cognitive functioning both now and as we age.

As an Asian-American therapist, I understand the unique experiences and struggles of the BIPOC and LGBTQ communities. I have seen how social, cultural, and religious factors impact our mental health. I believe our past experiences, especially those related to early attachment relationships, can significantly impact our current emotional and relational functioning.

Do you feel like yourself? If not, what might be missing that would help you to feel more like yourself? Some days feel more challenging than others. Seasons of worry, sadness, insecurity, and relational distance can feel impossible to overcome. You might try to hide your emotions from the people around you for fear that they won't understand. You might experience greater conflict in relationships and isolate yourself as a result. You deeply desire a place to feel safe, understood, and known without judgment.

My passion lies in supporting those of all ages and identity backgrounds who are interested in self exploration and discovery. I practice from a trauma informed, sex-positive, queer affirming, feminist, spiritual and social justice-oriented standpoint. Understanding how the “personal is political” and how psychological challenges are rooted in systemic oppression is central to my work. My experience in sexual/reproductive healthcare and working as a birth and postpartum doula catalyzed my interest in supporting those undergoing vulnerability regarding their sexuality, pain, pleasure, health, gender identity and life transitions.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Fullerton?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
