I am a native San Franciscan, born in the Mission District in 1948, and raised in the Bay Area. I became a licensed psychotherapist (license MFT 12297) in 1978 and have been in private practice since then. I am also a writer, and my column "The Examined Life", appeared regularly in San Francisco newspapers for over twenty years.
In my experience, the most common complaint I hear about former therapists is "S/he just listened and wouldn't say anything." My approach is more conversational. I don't hesitate to offer my own observations and opinions and to give advice when it is requested.
I began to study psychology when I was still a teenager, and by the time I was twenty, I was clear that becoming a therapist was my sole career goal. I began working in the field in my early twenties, as a counselor. researcher, and psychiatric technician. I was licensed in 1978 and have been in private practice since then.
