Congratulations for taking the first step towards helping yourself! Psychotherapy is a collaborative process and I define my job as meeting you where you are, identifying where you might be stuck, and helping you to move towards your goals. Each person is unique and treatment needs to be tailored to your goals. Effective treatment helps a person to adapt to change, manage stress and to be more effective in their lives and relationships.

From the outside it seems like you have it all together, so why aren't you content? Maybe it's work, your relationships, or something else you can't quite put your finger on. Maybe you're struggling with feelings of sadness, unfulfillment, or pain. Maybe you find it difficult to relax, be present, and are constantly looking forward to when you'll finally be happy. Whatever it is, it doesn't feel good, and it definitely doesn't have to be this way. In therapy, I will work to build a collaborative relationship where we can explore these feelings together, and help you to tap into a life that holds more meaning, ease, and fulfilment.

Hi! I'm Lou. I work with queer and trans young adults. Therapy can be challenging, but it can also be beautiful and healing. It is my goal to meet you with compassion, support, and a safe space to help you through whatever difficulties or pain you may be experiencing. As a part of the Queer and trans community, I understand how important representation and connection is. Of course, we all have our own unique stories. Your story is not my story, and my story is not yours. However, I find that it is incredibly helpful (and dare I say, healing even) to have that common understanding and shared experience with my clients.

I specialize in working with adults, who struggle with building and maintaining healthy/happy relationships. Many of my clients feel a lot of pain in their romantic and/or familial relationships. Some clients feel unsupported, unappreciated, or invalidated and struggle with communicating with their loved ones. Others feel unsafe with their partner because of their own past trauma, anxiety, or depression. Some of the individuals I work with have been diagnosed with ADHD or have a partner with that diagnosis. They may have a difficult time connecting with one another and understanding each other's experiences.

I typically work with individuals whose lives have become unmanageable due to exposure to stressors, adversity, and trauma. Encounters with trauma often markedly disrupt a person’s life, making emotions difficult to manage and misdirecting energies away from important life goals and aspirations. Trauma also makes it difficult to navigate life transitions smoothly, establish and maintain close, meaningful relationships, and feel good about oneself. Psychotherapy is a collaborative, empathic endeavor that works to create a positive sense of self. It promotes agency, choice, and freedom, and, ultimately, engenders a life well-lived.

Preferred contact method is email, please check your junk for my reply! I feel so fortunate to have found a career that I love, and cherish! My practice came about in the form of an epiphany one day, as I sat on the AIDS unit in NYC as a volunteer. As I listened to a man share his story, I realized that he had not been celebrated for his many talents, but had been ostracized for having AIDS. I decided that my philosophy was going to be-"our differences are what make us beautiful, we should all be celebrated for our uniqueness." This is the philosophy I live by daily.

Life events sometimes throw us curve balls when we least expect it. Do you now or often experience anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, divorce, or even post-pandemic returning to work concerns? These are stressors that give us feelings of uncertainty and hopelessness, impacting the ability to function in relationships, occupation, social life, and obtaining educational goals. Does it seem as though you’ve been knocked down once too many times and getting up is a struggle? When in the middle of a struggle words such as “tomorrow” and “feeling better” seem so far away.

Sometimes personal tragedy strikes and you need to talk. Often systemic oppression and microaggressions can cause depression, anxiety and PTSD. I believe that hope is an endurant quality that gets us through the hardest parts of our life. Counseling is about restoring hope and advocacy within the context of an apathetic society. I teach self advocacy skills and boundary setting. My overall approach is compassion focused. I believe that clients know what is in their best interest and I hope to assist you in reaching your goals.

Perhaps you’re coming from the school of hard knocks. Because of your own trauma history, you may be re-creating painful experiences that are familiar and habitual. You want something more and/or different, but you don't know how to change. If you’re reading this, you might be interested in an offering of slowing down and practicing mindfulness as a way to befriend the various parts of your Self and understand your mind / body connection. You may wish to release burdens that no longer serve you. When a feeling of safety, connection, and choice is experienced within you, thriving is not only possible; it can become a way of life.

I have a history of working with many different types of people and concerns. I work best with people who are willing to do self-observation as that is the key to learning about your own thinking and feeling patterns, which is what we are trying to modify. I take a holistic approach and self-observation provides the basis for all of the other work. It is important to start noticing and working with the sensations in the body that accompany our thoughts and feelings, as our body holds the memories of everything we have ever experienced and is the vehicle in which we move and feel in the world.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Tacoma?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
