My approach is based on a simple, powerful principle: I’m here to help you feel better. If you’re done diving endlessly into the past without connecting to the present, have been in therapy forever with little to show for it, or are skeptical of therapy and willing to try something different, then let’s get started. I'm committed to using what works and learning from what doesn't so our sessions are effective and meaningful. I work with families, couples, and children, and I understand the importance of a compassionate, patient, individualized approach. Ultimately, therapy should be a dynamic experience that improves your life.

Are you well educated and yet feel overwhelmed by life? Is anxiety or depression making every day a struggle? Are you unhappy in your relationship, going through a life transition, or reeling from a major loss? Do you have noisy inner critics who make you feel bad about yourself.? When you feel out of balance maybe your self-care goes out the window. You feel off, not yourself, simple daily tasks of life become difficult. Maybe you are irritable with the people you care about the most. Maybe you want to talk to someone but are worried you will burden your family or friends.

I specialize in substance abuse. I am a seasoned counselor and for the past decade my focus has been on working with individuals, groups, families, and couples who are struggling with substance use. I have led others to a life of understanding themselves and their relationships with substances. I have led many to make sense of the insanity that surrounds the disease of addiction.

I see therapy as an opportunity for fostering personal growth and achieving emotional maturity. We all face challenges and struggles at various points in our lives. Failure to overcome these challenges can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression and may impact one's relationship with family and friends. While we can't change the past, therapy can help uncover long-standing patterns and behaviors that can get in the way of fulfilling relationships with ourselves and others. I will help you understand the problems you are facing and find meaning and solutions that work best for you.

When you look at your husband, you still see a glimmer of that person you fell in love with all those years ago. But, with each day, that spark fades further away. It’s as though somewhere along the way you forgot how to speak the same language. Now, you feel lonely even when you’re together. Every conversation turns into an argument, so you’ve begun to avoid each other. You want to repair things, but every attempt you’ve made has proven futile. You’re running out of options and don’t know where to go from here. It feels like all you can do is stand by and helplessly watch as this relationship disintegrates before your eyes.

Treatment involves investing in your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being, and is well worth the effort! Developmental factors, relationships, grief, stress, anxiety, depression, transitions, and trauma all impact our natural ability to maintain balance and live happier and more satisfying lives. Often, the first goal of treatment is to identify the reason for problems. I conduct comprehensive neuropsychological testing across the lifespan, to clarify diagnosis, identify learning disabilities, and assess behavioral, emotional, and social problems, to provide concrete recommendations and an action plan for treatment.

Marriage Whisperer! That's what a recent couple called me after one of our sessions. The reality is that I've been fortunate to be trained by Harville Hendrix, an expert in the field of couple's therapy and the founder of Imago Relationship Therapy. Imago therapy is a state-of-the-art system that gives couples of all kinds, the knowledge, and most importantly, the TOOLS to help each other give and receive the love they want. I work with couples both in my office, and in the weekend "Getting the Love You Want" workshops.

At times in our lives we all have experiences that leave us feeling anxious, depressed, sad, grieving, stressed, worried, uncertain, vulnerable, fearful, frustrated, angry, confused, at a loss. An experienced therapist can help deal with the current issues causing the distress, as well as explore the life experiences that may be contributing to one's current emotional struggles. I work with adults who want to change patterns of thinking, acting, and feeling that contribute to dissatisfaction in daily life. Some of those issues include: Relationships; Grief and Loss; Mood Disorders; Trauma; Parenting; Life Transitions; Self-Esteem.

I believe that healing can occur within the context of a trusted relationship. I work with adults and families to help people better understand the things that are getting in the way of living a full, productive, and satisfying life. That could be a child’s struggle with emotional regulation, a parent’s difficulty with triggering behaviors or understanding how to manage challenging moments, or an adult who struggles to develop and sustain intimate relationships.

Chances are, you have happened upon this website because you are looking for something to be different: a feeling, a relationship, a thought, a mood... Together, we will determine what needs to change by looking outside ourselves (exploring roles, rules, connection, boundaries, communication, and support) and by looking within ouselves (exploring thoughts, feelings, coping skills, internal dialogue, and how we've made meaning out of different experiences). Through the process of learning, accepting and changing, something inherently will be different...and you will feel different.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Skokie?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
