I have a background working with clients with substance use disorders and those carrying trauma from their past. Sometimes the brain can become stuck in survival mode because it is doing what it thinks is best for you. I believe that by having a safe place to compassionately explore the things we keep inside, it can open up the doorway to healing and allow the brain to shift from a state of survival to one of thriving. I am a neurodivergent therapist who loves working with neurodivergent clients to support them in identifying what works for them to be their most functional and happy self.

Welcome! I'm currently accepting clients and enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults who are experiencing barriers to living the life they want to live. The majority of my work has been with helping preteens and teens navigate that fun (and super awkward) transition between childhood and adulthood, and I specialize in working with those who have experienced trauma, anxiety, low self-esteem, suicidal ideation, and self-harming behaviors. I tailor my approach to your specific needs (and comfort level), but most often draw from EMDR, ACT, DBT, and TF-CBT.

Hello. I'm Donna Borders. I've learned that each stage and circumstance of life can bring challenges, but also opportunities for growth. Because we are all human, we need support from time to time to reflect on where we are; what we might wish to change; and how to better cope with the life issues presented to us. If you find yourself worrying a great deal, feeling less motivated, and overthinking situations, it's a perfect time to talk about it. I’m here to be your support, and offer you tools to strengthen your ability to reduce your stress response, and experience joy in every day.

The longest journey begins with a single step and I am grateful to walk that path with you. It can be frightening and intimidating to begin the process of therapy; however, that experience can help you to make the changes that lead to a happier and more fulfilled life. Through a collaborative and safe relationship I establish with my clients, progress and change is made. Areas of practice include mood disorders, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, men's concerns, and ADHD and cognitive functioning (including testing services). I also enjoy working with clients from adolescents to seniors.

My philosophy of healing is like working your way through a set of nesting dolls from the outer doll representing why you want to heal: trauma, attachment/relationship injury, depression, grief, and anxiety. The next doll holds the symptoms, thoughts, and feelings of the first doll. The next doll may may hold your negative beliefs you have perceived about yourself, others, and the world. The next doll may hold consequences and life impairments. The final doll represents your core and authentic self. The person you would be without all of the other dolls in relationship to the unity of mind, soul, heart, body and spirit.

I’m Sina, a neurodivergent provisional- LPC and registered dietitian/nutritionist. I work with folks identifying as (or exploring) ADHD, autistic, genderqueer, and more. I also work with folks experiencing eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image concerns. We know these complex experiences can also come with anxiety, depression, trauma, etc. so if you or someone you know is looking for support in these areas, I’d love to hear from you. I use a relational, neurodivergent-affirming, and weight-inclusive approach to my work with clients, aligning with anti-oppressive and anti-diet frameworks.

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
