In my twenties, I saw a therapist who was completely silent (the traditional way) and wasn’t helpful at all. Then I saw another who was intellectually and emotionally “there” and changed my life. He inspired me to become a psychotherapist and to practice in a collaborative way that lands with my patients.
In traditional psychotherapy, the past is the endpoint. But I find that rather than to retraumatize, the past is relevant, emotionally, intellectually, for its import on the present. There’s a source of energy in your history and in any existing trauma, and our process is to understand and rechannel it, so it works for you, not against you.
