All of you is welcome here. I work with people who have been told that they are “too much”. Too angry, demanding, depressed, emotional, intellectual, needy, sad, sensitive, stubborn, and my favorite, “too irrational”. What is the right amount of irrational? There is no measure for feelings, soul or psyche. You cannot be "Too Much". It’s impossible. The problem is that somewhere along the way we adopt these labels and accept them as true. From here, we turn away from ourselves and develop symptoms that manifest as unbearable feelings experienced as longing, dread, numbness and a sense of having been damaged.

When you are physically ill you turn to your doctor, hoping they can help you feel better. Problems like depression, anxiety, impulsivity, uncontrollable anger, guilt, or low self-confidence can be as painful, if not more so, than physical illness; they can also create serious relationship and work difficulties. I have over 25 years of experience and I have helped many adults, adolescents, and couples who had received limited or no benefit from previous therapists, other doctors, or medications. I work well with people who are skeptical of, or intimidated by, talk therapy.

As a psychologist, my goal is to help you to better understand and overcome the obstacles you face and ultimately lead the happy and fulfilling life you deserve. I utilize evidence-based psychotherapy, tailored specifically to you and your needs. Therapy is by no means an easy endeavor, but I strive to provide a environment that is both supportive and challenging. In doing so, I believe I can help you to cope, to develop and maintain satisfying relationships, and to achieve the meaningful and long-lasting change you want.

When we are wrestling with anxiety or depression, all we think of is getting rid of the pain. But actually, the focus must be on making you emotionally healthy, i.e., enabling you to become a happy and fulfilled individual. In my 40 years of working with people, all emotional ill-ease dissipates with a robust sense of confidence and resulting good mood. Think of those moments when you have felt entirely confident and happy. Did you experience any emotional discomfort? Of course not. For those moments, you felt wonderful. It is psychotherapies’ goal/mission to give you the tools to elevate your mood every single day of your life.

Has your child's school told you they need to be tested? Have you been rejected for a job and need to be re-tested to demonstrate you actually do qualify? Has your therapy hit a dead end and your therapist needs diagnostic clarity to take you to the next level? My practice was designed to address each of these concerns and more. Testing and evaluation opens up doors to school services, better job opportunities, and in some cases, can help the courts better understand your side of situations. Together, we can use your testing results to help you navigate these systems even more effectively. Not offering therapy at this time.

I specialize in relationship issues, anxiety, LGBTQIA issues, and trauma. My style is approachable and warm while open to challenge and complexity. Many of the adults and adolescents I meet with are looking to process challenging feelings, improve their relationships, and understand themselves better. Others are looking to heal trauma (complex trauma, sexual trauma, or PTSD), navigate addictions, compulsions, or work through intricate patterns that are depressing their development. Together, we will thoughtfully explore the distinct reason(s) you are pursuing psychotherapy.

Do you struggle navigating life? Do you wish you could increase your understanding and skills to make life less challenging? The good news is therapy can help you gain control over your life and pursue your dreams. Life is beautiful, but there are many tools that we as humans need to reach our full potential. Low confidence, readiness to change, trouble communicating, and lack of social support are just some barriers that can prevent you from getting “unstuck.” As a member of the Queer community, I empathize with these experiences and I have done intensive work personally and professionally that has changed my life for the better.

Oftentimes, people just need someone to listen to them, to help them work through an issue, and sort out their feelings. That's where I come in as a licensed psychotherapist as well as a medical social worker. I'm skilled at hearing what people are saying and helping them to figure out strategies for improving their situation. I work with a variety of clients ---men, women and children from all sexualities, gender identities, and races to help them with all sorts of issues. My clientele ranges in ages; however, a majority of my clients are in their early 30's.

I believe we're all looking for the same thing: to be heard and understood. My approach is rooted in relational therapy, emphasizing the development of the therapeutic relationship as a foundation for healing. I advocate for a focus on the human experience over pathologizing mental health and understand that cultural differences, societal pressures, and life's inherent chaos impact our mental well-being in profound ways. While I do have a clinical side and apply therapeutic modalities, my priority isn’t stamping a diagnosis on you and calling it a day; it’s all about truly standing by the power of the therapy bond.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
