In my almost decade of working with individuals, families, and systems I have found that the greatest amount of healing and change happens in relationship with others. None of us is an island-even if we’ve often had to operate as one. Together we will co-create a space where you feel able to both rest and grow in yourself. This means that I strive to not only support you in processing all that you bring to our sessions, but in reimagining how you can engage with people, places, and systems outside of our sessions.

Sometimes life can present us with difficulties, as well as opportunities, that we don't expect or aren't sure how to handle. Many people find ways of healing, growing, and even striving through the counseling process. Once you've decided to seek out psychotherapy, finding the therapist who is the right fit for you can feel overwhelming. The psychologists, professional counselors and social workers at River City Psychological Services (RCPS) strive to create a safe environment where people can grow and heal.

There are two things that I have learned about therapy over the years as both a client and a therapist: 1) Therapy takes “work”! This “work” looks different for folx because we are on our unique journeys- this is okay! 2) Healing is not linear. Meaning, you may experience a range of feelings, thoughts, and reactions on your healing journey- this is okay! Whether you are interested in delving deeper into yourself, exploring past and present experiences, just want to talk, etc., I am here to support you along the way.

Let's be honest really quickly: We've all been a "Petty Patty/Pete" at some point in our lives. It's even become popular, especially in social media. Listen to this, what I've learned in life & this field is whether we have been that person or been affected by one, we can all chase the root down to something deeper than the situation, i.e. sadness, hurt, anxiety or trauma. I am here to offer you a non-judgmental space to process from the petty to highly problematic experience. I invite you to work with me to heal in order for you to feel better from the inside out & have more "Peaceful Patty/Pete" experiences and relationships.

I keep it real and relevant. You want your relationship to be better? So do I. Let's work together to make it happen.

Vulnerability: while rewarding, can be daunting. It isn’t easy to let someone into your internal landscape and I value the possibility of learning yours. My name is Sam and I work with clients to become intimately comfortable with the buried and beautifully impactful aspects of themselves. Often, the relationship to yourself contributes to how your days unfold in the world around you. When was the last time you heard or nurtured the parts of yourself that long for you? In doing so, a gateway opens up to a sense of self-worth that will allow you to experience yourself and your environment with a new lens.

Life can be described as a beautiful gift, and it is also true that life can present us with circumstances that seem unfair and insufferable. When this occurs, we could benefit from support that enables us to develop insight into ourselves, obtain clarity, identify choices, accept responsibility, foster growth, learn new skills, build resilience, pursue freedom, and feel heard, seen, and empowered as we navigate life. Asking for help is challenging for many reasons, but I have witnessed how being receptive to support has brought about a multitude of blessings. I would love to serve as a source of hope and light on your journey.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
