For 25 years I worked with over 16,000 suicidal patients on the mental health unit of St. Francis Hospital with my office partner, Psychiatrist Dr. Sunida Bintasan, From observing their common patterns, I created an educational program (for persons with issues of deep despair, hopelessness, depression, feeling "LOST" & "TRAPPED" & "STUCK", and often with recurrent suicidal thinking) called Contextual-Conceptual Therapy (CCT). Combining expressive arts techniques, education, and therapy using "maps, models, & metaphors", it helps clients discover the roots of their deep despair, feeling trapped & lost, and/or suicidal thinking.

I have worked the past 17 years in various mental health settings. Working with the chronic mentally ill, addicts, and suicidal clients, I have learned the importance of listening with compassion, and communicating effectively to reassure the individual is being heard. I’ve enjoyed working in community based mental health, which helped me develop the therapeutic skills necessary for the treatment of clients in crisis. It also allowed me to connect and interact with a large diverse population.

My years of experience, working for a restorative justice program, as volunteer for the National Suicide Prevention Line, and extensive global travel have helped me build trust and respect with my clients.
Therapy offers the opportunity for you to share your story and to feel supported. I specialize in treatment for adults who are experiencing depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). My primary objective as a therapist is to build trust and respect with my clients so that they feel comfortable exploring vulnerable and difficult topics with me. I practice trauma informed care and I am trained in several different psychological approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 3 that I tailor to each individual.

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and am comfortable and skilled helping you cope with trauma, suicidal thoughts, and family issues.
I believe that all humans deserve to live a life that gives them personal fulfillment, peace, and more joy than hardship. I can help you work through life transitions, trauma, and all of the fear, anxiety, depression, and big emotions that come with them. I tend towards practices of mindfulness, grounding, acceptance, and nature- focused therapies, but my background is in biology, so I also tend to be pragmatic, evidence-focused, and like to help you understand the "why" of the practice as you take it on.

Life is often difficult, and it can be a lonely experience trying to understand what has happened in your life, who you are, and who you are becoming. Experiences (historical and current) in life build up over time and can leave you feeling stuck in thought patterns, cycles, and in a life that might be less than you'd hoped for. The contrast between the desires inside you and the experience of your actual life can be crushing. Therapy can help as we tend together to the spaces in you that need tending and look more closely at your experiences.

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist treating individuals, couples and families with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, sexual concerns and career challenges. I work to establish a place where people can disclose and pursue their most personal challenges openly and truthfully. Therapy is a kind of 'second chance', an opportunity to 'correct' behaviors that may have been necessary in the past.

I believe in the importance of feeling connected in relationships, to our environment, and to ourselves. Addressing the “here and now” that arises during therapy allows our sessions to adapt and work with the difficult emotions or thoughts that come up, in an environment that is judgment free and safe. I specialize in working with those who are experiencing anxiety, depression, agoraphobia, trauma, life transitions, self-esteem issues, grief and chronic pain, among other issues. I am LGBTQIA+, gender-affirming, and enjoy working with clients along the spectrum of neurodiversity and disability.

You're struggling with past traumas. Maybe you don't even realize that a lot of your frustration, anxiety and depression and current struggles are linked to past traumas. It can be overwhelming dealing with intense emotions and identify the why behind it to change your life. I would love to work with you and address some of the emotions and struggles that you have been dealing with. Have there been some past events in your life that have fundamentally changed you as a person?

I believe we humans all have inherent goodness, beauty, and resiliency to us. Unfortunately life leaves none of us unscathed whether it be from harmful systems, family of origin dynamics, life circumstances, toxic relationships, traumatic events, or even our own self sabotaging behaviors. Regardless of how it happens, we can find ourselves feeling stuck or in pieces. While there are many wonderful healing practices out there, I believe that therapy is a great way to start understanding how we got to where we are and to begin to grow in new directions, with the hope of living a more vibrant, grounded, and creative life.

You may be trapped by events, relationships, or stories from the past. Perhaps you wish to alleviate the suffering you hold. Or you might find yourself seeking to cultivate a deeper connection with yourself and others. Life is filled with a range of experiences that influence the way we see the world and make meaning of the past. Rooted at the core of every experience is human relationship; relationships reflect pieces of ourselves and shape the complex beings we become. Fragments of our relationships become part of us, influencing and guiding our choices.

Everyone experiences anxiety, depression, and loss at sometime in their life. Often events and people happen in our lives that cause distress. No one deserves to be in pain and no one should have to endure when there is the possibility to reduce the pain. My goal is to help my clients find relief through self exploration and a desire to want to feel better. My job is to walk with my clients in their path to mindfulness. My goal is to provide a safe space for emotions to be expressed and validated without judgment. Together we will identify patterns and triggers, and create skills to reduce future emotional distress.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
